BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (KABC) — Jackie, the much-loved Big Bear bald eagle followed by fans around the world, has undergone a critical blood transfusion from another eagle as she continues fighting a serious illness, caregivers at the Ojai Raptor Center said in their latest update.
The procedure was completed successfully thanks to Spirit, the resident bald eagle at the California Living Museum in Bakersfield, who served as the blood donor.
Veterinary testing has also brought some relief, ruling out lead poisoning as well as foreign materials such as fishing hooks, line or weights.
According to the center, Jackie’s kidney inflammation appears to be improving. She is eating well, able to perch, and remains alert, strong and responsive.

Still, Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit behind the popular Big Bear eagle nest camera, said Jackie remains severely anemic.
“She was taken in for a CT scan; there are no obvious signs of cancer or any metals in her body,” the organization reported.
A team of veterinary specialists is continuing to search for the root cause of Jackie’s condition while she receives round-the-clock intensive care.
Her rehabilitation team emphasized that, despite the promising signs, it remains too soon to know how Jackie’s treatment and recovery will ultimately progress.
“While we are encouraged by the dedication and collaboration surrounding this case, it is still too early to predict the outcome,” the update posted on Facebook said. “We know many of you are hoping for more answers, and so are we. Wildlife medicine often requires patience, and some answers simply take time.”
Another update is expected to be shared Monday.
