Long Island ATV Takeover Sparks Chaos and Police Chases

A disruptive street takeover sent parts of three Long Island communities into turmoil Saturday, as roughly 200 people on ATVs and motorbikes swarmed roadways, performed dangerous stunts and confronted police, officials said.

The chaos stretched across major roads and residential blocks in Hauppauge, Brentwood and Bay Shore, prompting a wave of 911 calls before authorities made three arrests and impounded at least 10 vehicles, according to Suffolk County police.

Video obtained by The Post shows large groups of riders taking over both lanes of traffic on Route 347 in Hauppauge, with many wearing masks, bandanas and sunglasses that appeared to conceal their identities.

The footage shows riders speeding through residential streets, popping risky wheelies and being recorded by others in what appeared to be a stunt staged for social media.

At points, so many ATVs and motorbikes were packed together that riders performed tricks just inches apart, with some nearly losing control or colliding, the video shows.

After motorists and residents inundated 911 with complaints, officers dispersed the gathering in Hauppauge and arrested Ava Mongiello, 23, and Jahkil Arroyo, 29, while also seizing several bikes, police said.

Authorities said a portion of the group later reassembled near Motor Parkway in Brentwood before heading toward Bay Shore.

Police caught up with the riders again around 6:30 p.m. in Bay Shore after two ATVs broke down, but the riders fled on foot, officials said. Officers tackled 22-year-old Shamir Solomon to the ground and later said he was carrying a loaded gun.

Mongiello and Arroyo were both charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. They issued desk appearance tickets and let go, police said.

Solomon was hit with charges of criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful speed contest and reckless driving — which could land him in prison for up to 15 years if convicted on the gun charge.

Solomon was held overnight and was arraigned in Central Islip on Sunday, when he pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bail, according to the New York State court database.
