A high-speed police chase across Los Angeles ended Tuesday evening with several people detained after the driver of a reportedly stolen Mercedes-Benz SUV raced along freeways and city streets, threading through traffic and narrowly missing other vehicles.
The pursuit, which was captured on video, began just before 6 p.m. when officers tried to pull over the white SUV. Authorities said the vehicle had reportedly been stolen out of the Laguna Beach area.
Early information from officials also suggested the suspect may have been armed with a handgun.
Footage from the Los Angeles police chase showed the driver barreling down the right shoulder of the southbound 405 Freeway to get around heavy traffic before leaving the freeway in the Del Rey area, where the pursuit pushed onto surface streets.
The Mercedes SUV was seen blowing through red lights, darting between cars and crossing into lanes of oncoming traffic as officers continued tracking the vehicle from behind.
One particularly tense moment came on the northbound 110 Freeway, where the fleeing driver suddenly found the SUV surrounded by a large group of dirt bike riders moving alongside traffic.
Several riders appeared to pop wheelies as they passed the Mercedes, adding another layer of danger as the suspect merged into freeway traffic with police units still in pursuit.
The chase came to an end just before 6:30 p.m. when the driver pulled into a parking structure near Hill and Eighth streets in downtown Los Angeles.
Officers quickly surrounded the garage and established a perimeter while searching for those inside the vehicle.
Police said multiple occupants of the SUV were taken into custody after the vehicle stopped. However, authorities continued searching for at least one additional suspect believed to have fled the parking structure.
No major injuries were immediately reported, despite the reckless pursuit spanning freeways and busy city streets during the evening commute.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not yet released the identities of those detained or announced potential criminal charges.
