Melania Trump Helps Reunite Children Lost in Ukraine War

After being separated from their families by four years of war, five Ukrainian and Russian children have been reunited with loved ones in a return home credited to First Lady Melania Trump.

Trump, who was born in Slovenia, announced the latest reunions on Thursday morning, emphasizing that the welfare of children must come before geopolitical divisions. ‘While diplomacy and peace-building are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes,’ she said.

In the same statement, she described each family reunion as a powerful sign that humanity can endure even amid conflict, calling it a ‘reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war.’

The First Lady also said her team would keep working with officials in both Moscow and Kyiv to help ensure more children displaced by the Russia-Ukraine war are safely returned to their families.

Her effort is focused on bringing home minors caught up in what has become Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

The latest return represents the fifth wave of family reunifications since Melania Trump disclosed last October that she had been communicating directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the children affected by the war.

At the time, Melania, who grew up under the influence of a Soviet-era power structure, said she had been speaking with Putin’s representative about the plight of children suffering because of the conflict.

‘Much has unfolded since Putin received my letter,’ she said in October, referring to a message on the issue that President Trump personally delivered to Putin during their August 2025 summit in Alaska.

‘Since then, President Putin and I have had an open channel on the welfare of these children.’

‘Each of these children has lived through the trauma of war,’ the First Lady said during her last announcement. ‘Three were separated from their parents and displaced to the Russian Federation due to frontline fighting. The other five were separated across international borders because of the ongoing conflict. One young girl, in particular, has now been reunited with her family after traveling from Ukraine to Russia.’

Her office says that about 27 children have been reunited with their families. Twenty-two of those are Ukrainian children.

Thousands of Ukrainian children have been snatched from their homes and schools, primarily across the occupied eastern territories – and funneled into Russia since 2022 when the conflict first started.

In a move branded by humanitarian groups as ‘digital child trafficking masked as bureaucracy,’ some of these young victims were even logged into a searchable Russian adoption database allowing users to sort them by descriptors like eye color, age and how many siblings they have.

Russia’s campaign targeting Ukraine’s youngest victims landed Vladimir Putin with an International Criminal Court arrest warrant in March 2023 for war crimes related to mass child abduction.

While UN investigators verified that more than 1,200 children were stolen across five Ukrainian regions as of this past March, officials in Kyiv warn the nightmare is far more vast – estimating the real figure could be as high as 20,000.

In the meantime, the war wages on.

Over four years after Russia’s full–scale invasion, the war remains a violent conflict of attrition, even as diplomacy reemerges following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Oval Office meeting this week with President Trump to discuss Patriot missile co–production and renewed peace talks.

On the ground, combat remains bogged down along the eastern front near Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka, where Russian forces make slow, costly incremental gains against fortified Ukrainian lines.

Meanwhile, the air war has escalated sharply: Moscow continues to unleash missile and drone barrages across Ukrainian cities, while Kyiv counters with aggressive deep strikes against Russian oil refineries, military logistics and Black Sea shipping lanes.
