Record-Low Danube Reveals Sunken Nazi Ships, Mammoth Bones

Call it a shipwreck spectacle.

Dozens of World War II-era vessels, including rusting Nazi warships, have reappeared in Europe’s Danube River after water levels fell to exceptionally low marks.

The long-submerged finds — along with woolly mammoth bones — have been exposed as a punishing summer drought and heat wave grips parts of Eastern Europe, according to CBS.

At least 20 of the striking wrecks, some still carrying weapons from Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet, are now visible above the river’s surface, the outlet reported.

Near the Serbian port town of Prahovo, onlookers have been drawn to one battered vessel with a corroded hull and a snapped mast where a Nazi flag once flew.

The eerie collection resurfaced nearly eight decades after German commanders intentionally sank as many as 200 ships in September 1944 in the Danube gorge while under Soviet attack.

Communist Yugoslav authorities later removed some of the wrecks, but many stayed underwater because they were carrying explosives.

Officials are now working to keep Danube River traffic moving along the busy waterway, which forms part of the border between Serbia and Romania, CBS reported.

“As you can see, the [big] ships can’t pass anymore,” Krsta Brandic, a Prahovo resident, told the outlet.

The river, which is Europe’s second longest, flows through 10 countries.

The plunging water levels also exposed the bones of a woolly mammoth on the river bed in Bulgaria, a local museum said.

The jawbone and tusk fragments found near the northeastern city of Ruse “very likely” belonged to a woolly mammoth that lived during the Ice Age, Nikolay Nenov, director of the Regional Historical Museum, told AFP.

The Danube’s levels in Hungary’s capital of Budapest dropped to just four inches Monday — compared to the previous record-low of 13 inches in 2018.
