Keith Urban Reportedly Relieved Over Nicole Kidman’s New Romance

In June, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman would have reached what once seemed like a milestone few Hollywood couples manage: 20 years of marriage.

In years past, fans might have expected the occasion to be marked by their familiar social media tributes — affectionate messages, heart emojis and declarations that hinted at forever.

This time, however, there was no anniversary celebration.

The former couple ended their relationship in late 2025, and instead of posting about Urban, Kidman was later seen in Portofino, Italy, with what appeared to be a new romantic interest: millionaire private equity businessman Michael Reinstein.

Kidman, 59, was photographed beside the pool at a villa, dressed in a revealing all-white outfit as she spoke with Reinstein, the 54-year-old owner of Sunset Magazine, beneath large orange umbrellas. The pair reportedly met at a pre-Oscars party earlier this year, only months after her divorce from the country music star was finalized.

Their connection appeared to continue stateside, with Reinstein spotted a few days ago collecting a smiling Kidman from Hollywood Burbank Airport in his black Ferrari.

Contrary to reports that Urban, 58, was ‘devastated’ by the new pairing, insiders have told the Daily Mail that he is somewhat relieved because although Kidman may have filed for divorce, Urban was the one who ended the marriage – and friends close to the couple weren’t surprised.

‘Keith’s been unhappy for a long time,’ one source told us. ‘He didn’t want to be on another red carpet or have a staff full of people and be forced to wear designer [clothes]. He doesn’t care about any of that. That’s not who he is, and he’s been dealing with it for a long time.

‘He just wants to make music and play music. The rest was all very complicated and outside of his comfort zone.’

His apparent desire for space and privacy has been documented many times throughout their 19-year marriage. He even skipped walking the red carpet at the Country Music Association Awards last year.

In a 2020 interview with Marie Claire, Kidman spoke about needing to give the only male in the predominantly female household time to be alone.

‘At times, he just needs to escape with his guitar,’ she told the outlet. ‘Sometimes I’ll find him in his closet playing guitar. That’s when I know we really need to give him space.’

As a producer and one of the highest-paid actresses in the world, Kidman’s career naturally generates more high-profile obligations than Urban’s. In the past three years alone, she has starred in 12 TV and film productions and has produced nine. Meanwhile, Urban released just one album, played a Las Vegas residency, and went on a world tour for most of 2025.

While the two have actively supported each other at different events and award shows throughout their relationship, Kidman’s schedule has proved more strenuous than her ex-husband’s at times. Most notably, keeping her from attending his father’s funeral in 2015 while she was on set shooting a film in England. He was, however, in attendance and sang Amazing Grace at her father’s memorial just a year prior.

Her career didn’t just amount to more public appearances, however. In a Rolling Stone interview from 2014, Urban admitted that his wife at the time thought he needed to step outside of her shadow, telling him that ‘no one knows you in Australia’ and that ‘to the populace outside of the country genre he was just Nic’s husband.’

For many years, it seemed the two were determined to make the long distance and busy schedules work. In the same interview with Rolling Stone, Urban revealed their limit for being apart was five days.

Kidman relayed to DuJour how her ‘incredible husband’ was willing to travel ‘even if it’s just for a night.’

‘I had an opening of [a play] three nights ago, and he’s in the middle of a tour in the States,’ she said at the time. ‘He flew ten hours to come and be with me for the night, and then he flew back and did a gig. That, for me, is love in action. That’s extraordinary. But I would do the same for him, and that’s what we’ve committed to as a couple.’

But that commitment seemingly hit a wall. While the divorce was announced in September 2025, there are allegations that the two had been living separate lives for almost three years. They were last seen together publicly in June last year at a FIFA Club World Cup match at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee. Kidman’s close friend, Reese Witherspoon, is a minority owner of the Major League Soccer club there.

Shortly after that sighting, Urban had what felt to fans like a few awkward interviews that mentioned his then-wife. When talking to Ryan Seacrest in July, the singer said mapping out their lives was ‘a job.’

Urban also abruptly ended another interview that same month when a radio host asked him about Kidman’s sex scenes with co-star Zac Efron in the film A Family Affair.

During a game called Wall of Truth with Hayley & Max in the Morning, on Mix 102.3, he was asked, ‘What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV and radio?’

After a bit of silence, a producer confirmed that he had hung up the Zoom call.

‘I think his team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question,’ the producer told the hosts, to which she answered, ‘I knew that would happen. He doesn’t like talking about his wife.’

Other allegedly uncomfortable moments resurfaced after the two announced their split. A September 2024 interview with Australian radio show Gold 101.7’s Jonesy & Amanda went viral as the internet retroactively tried to decode his actions.

Urban seemed noticeably curt when asked about the origin of their love story.

‘If you hadn’t both been there that day, would your paths somewhere have inevitably crossed? Or maybe this incredible life story wouldn’t have happened,’ the host asked Urban.

He replied: ‘No, I think it would.’ But when she pushed further, asking if he believed in fate, he quickly answered ‘no idea,’ followed by what some deemed an awkward silence. As the host continued the questioning, Urban seemed to get more agitated before removing his jacket and saying, ‘Anyway, moving on.’

But according to our insider, Kidman has privately been the one who is angry. Her getting out and dating could actually ‘be a relief for [Urban],’ they said, because maybe now the Practical Magic 2 actress will ‘ease up a little.’

As of a few months ago, they claimed Kidman was ‘holding the kids over his head.’

‘She’s the one that’s mad at him. He is not getting to see his kids as much as he wants,’ they said. ‘It’s basically an “if you want to see them come back home” kinda thing.’

Kidman has already introduced their daughters to Reinstein, according to another source, who told us: ‘They all got together for lunch and had a nice time together. Nicole said it was a smashing success and everyone had fun because Michael is easy-going and likes to laugh, he is a light-hearted fellow. She is happy her girls are happy for her.

‘Sunday Rose is very pleased with Reinstein because his company Regent owns the fashion houses Bally, Sassoon and Escada, and she can pose for them. He has connections that will help her with modeling.’

According to the divorce filing, Kidman gets daughters Sunday, 18, and Faith, 15, the majority of the year – 306 days to be exact – with Urban seeing them every other weekend and alternating holidays.

That’s been the hardest part of this for the crooner, according to our first source, that and the barrage of rumors about him immediately after the divorce announcement. 

Just days after their divorce was filed, he was said to be dating his guitarist, Maggie Baugh and months later was tied to Karley Scott Collins, the opener on his 2025 High and Alive tour. The women, both 26, denied the reports – Baugh via a friend and Scott Collins directly on her Instagram Stories.

Sources tell the Daily Mail ‘none of the dating or sobriety rumors are true.’

‘He’s not dating anyone. He’s still sober. He didn’t mess up his sobriety. He’s about to hit 20 years this year. He did not fall off the wagon,’ the source said.

Urban, who married the Hollywood star back in 2006, has openly struggled with substance abuse in the past and credited her with saving his life.

‘I wasn’t in AA,’ he said during the 2014 interview with Rolling Stone. ‘I didn’t have a sponsor. I didn’t have anything. Meeting Nic and falling in love with Nic and starting a relationship with Nic became, I realize now in hindsight, my sobriety. That was how I was able to keep it together.’

Reports claim that a prenuptial agreement between the former Australian lovers would pay him out close to $11 million for staying sober – $600,000 a year since they tied the knot.

Despite her playing a major role in his life, Urban’s epiphany about his marriage came after he was asked a poignant question, according to our source.

‘He left her,’ they said. ‘His decision came after he was asked, “When you see yourself in ten years do you see Nicole in that picture?” And he clearly didn’t.

‘He’s a simple guy that just wants a house in Nashville and a house on the beach.’
