A 12-year-old California girl has made a remarkable recovery after a severe spinal injury left doctors worried she might never walk again.
Morgan Lopez suffered a spinal stroke on May 12 after doing a headstand during dance practice, turning what began as a routine session into a medical emergency.
Her father, Felipe Lopez, said Morgan returned home from practice and began vomiting almost immediately.
Believing his daughter may have had a concussion, he rushed her to urgent care. But before they could even get inside, he said, “in an instant, everything changed.”
“As I pulled into the Kaiser parking lot and parked the car, the unimaginable happened,” Lopez wrote on Instagram. “Morgan suffered a spinal stroke.”
A spinal stroke is a rare condition that happens when blood flow to the spinal cord is interrupted, potentially causing serious neurological damage.
Once at the hospital, physicians warned Morgan’s parents that their daughter might never walk again, according to KTLA.
Her parents chose not to tell her the devastating prognosis. Now, after Morgan took her first steps on Tuesday, they no longer have to.

‘We didn’t tell her there was a possibility she may never move again,’ her mother, Jamie Lopez, said. ‘We just have so much faith and hope in her.’
‘When she stood up, she had a big old smile on her face because when she stood up, it was easier than what she thought,’ her father added.
It was a far cry from the harrowing scenes Lopez saw unfold as he raced her to the hospital.
‘The look on my daughter’s face in that moment is something I will never forget. It is an image that will stay with me for the rest of my life,’ Lopez said.
He recalled how he yelled his daughter’s name, but she didn’t respond, prompting him to grab his daughter from the back seat and carry her into the urgent care begging for help.
Moments later, the father said she went into cardiac arrest.
‘A doctor happened to be walking through the lobby and dropped to the floor and began performing CPR right there in the middle of the Kaiser lobby,’ wrote Lopez.
‘Those moments felt like an eternity. By the grace of God, Morgan regained consciousness.’

She was rushed to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, where she was stabilized and where her journey of recovery would begin.
According to Moody a Neurorehabilitation Institute, spinal strokes make up 0.3 to 1.2 percent of all strokes.
After weeks in the hospital, Lopez shared that on May 23, Morgan began to move her toe.
‘It was way early to get our hopes up, but we had no idea what was about to happen next,’ said the father.
Lopez said after nearly a month in the hospital, she was transferred to a rehabilitation facility on June 8, 2026.
Morgan spent three months recovering at Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, working with therapists, training, and gaining strength and mobility in nearly all her muscles.
On Tuesday, she was able to walk out of the facility on her own.
‘Seeing her now with a smile on her face, taking steps,’ her mother said. ‘She was so excited to walk for the first time.’
She told the outlet she draws strength from her desire to dance again.
Morgan is continuing treatment at another hospital before she can go home.
She said she was grateful for the support from her friends, dance friends and family.
Hundreds supported her through GoFundMe, which will use donations to help cover medical expenses, treatments and the resources she needs for recovery.
