An 18-year-old Wisconsin woman is in custody after authorities say a road rage confrontation in Milwaukee ended with a mother being shot and killed.

Mariah Ruiz has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the death of 44-year-old Minerva Hernandez-Lopez, according to a criminal complaint reviewed by Law&Crime. Milwaukee police were called to the scene of a shooting at about 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 and found Hernandez-Lopez on the ground suffering from two gunshot wounds. Local Fox affiliate WITI reported that bystanders rushed to assist her after hearing gunfire, but despite their efforts and the response from medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Ruiz later surrendered to police with family members by her side. During a search of her vehicle, authorities allegedly recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the fatal shooting.

Ruiz allegedly admitted to firing the shots, according to the complaint. She also reportedly told detectives that a 16-year-old boy had urged her not to shoot and said she had been “having a bad day” following an argument with her mother.

Police arrested Ruiz and booked her into the Milwaukee County Jail, where she remains held on a $100,000 cash bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 28.

Hernandez-Lopez, who was the mother of two sons, is being remembered by loved ones as family and friends organized a meal train to support her children in the wake of her death.
