GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tarry Lee Stine, 57, was arrested Tuesday night after deputies say he battered a man, showed a handgun, and then refused to come out of a residence for about 45 minutes.
Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies were called at about 9:12 p.m. on August 25 to a home in the 4900 block of SW 63rd Boulevard, where Stine and both witnesses reportedly live. When deputies arrived, they made contact with the victim, who had several cuts on his torso and arms. The victim told deputies he had driven one of the witnesses to her residence, and once they arrived, she began arguing with a second witness.
As the argument continued, Stine allegedly reached through the open passenger-side window of the victim’s vehicle and punched him repeatedly, causing the injuries later observed by a deputy. Stine then allegedly stepped back, lifted his shirt, and displayed a small black handgun in his waistband. The victim said seeing the weapon made him fear for his life, and he left the property.
The first witness reportedly gave a similar account, saying the victim had driven her home before she and the second witness began arguing outside the vehicle. She said she saw Stine reach through the open passenger-side window and strike the victim multiple times, then step back, raise his shirt, and reveal a handgun tucked into his waistband. She told deputies she feared for the victim’s life when she saw the gun. She also said she had previously seen Stine with a handgun at the residence, though it had been in a holster.
The second witness reportedly told deputies that the first witness arrived with the victim and that the two women began arguing. She said the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat when Stine reached through the open passenger-side window and hit him. According to her account, Stine then backed away and lifted his shirt. She said Stine carries a pellet gun and had shown it to her earlier, telling her it was a pellet gun, but she added that it could easily be mistaken for a real handgun.
Deputies surrounded Stine’s residence and ordered him to come outside. The second witness reportedly exited the home and told deputies Stine was still inside. Deputies continued issuing commands over a loudspeaker for more than 45 minutes and reported seeing Stine looking at them from a window. After roughly 45 minutes, Stine came out of the residence and was taken into custody.
Stine has been charged with burglary with battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting an officer without violence. Court records list 13 felony convictions, including four violent felonies, and eight misdemeanor convictions, including three violent misdemeanors. He has served three state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2023. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered Stine held without bail pending a hearing on a State Attorney’s Office motion seeking to keep him detained without bail until trial; if the motion is denied, bail will be determined at that hearing.
