A former chemistry teacher has been convicted of sexually assaulting two teenage boys at a London school, bringing a decades-old case to court more than 40 years later.

Sally-Anne Bowen was found guilty on Aug. 27 of seven counts of indecent assault after jurors deliberated for nearly seven hours, according to The Guardian. The 65-year-old is due to be sentenced on Nov. 20.

Bowen had denied the charges at Harrow Crown Court in London, insisting the accusations were a “total fabrication.” She told the court she did not know one of the complainants and rejected claims that she had ever been involved with the other.

“Absolutely not, no relationship whatsoever,” Bowen said in court, according to The Guardian. “Student-teacher.”

Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe told jurors that one victim’s evidence carried a “visceral quality” and showed the profound and lasting consequences of the abuse.

“It’s not a schoolboy fantasy, is it? He’s started this account in 2014,” Wolfe said during the trial. “This has real-life implications for him [and] remained with him for decades.”

The offences began in 1988, when Bowen was teaching at Christ’s College Finchley, an all-boys school in London. At the time, she was in her mid-20s, while the boys were about 14 and 15 years old.

Concerns had been raised at the school around that period by a witness who reported that Bowen and a pupil appeared to be having a sexual relationship, according to a 2024 Teaching Regulation Agency report. The report, which detailed findings from a teacher misconduct panel, did not state whether the school took any action afterward.

One former student recalled in the report becoming close to Bowen after taking the same bus home from school. They got off at the same stop, and sometimes he walked her home.

He also described an incident at a café in which Bowen allegedly made an inappropriate sexual comparison after seeing him and his friends looking at a pornographic magazine. Over time, the student said he came to view Bowen as his best friend and believed they were in love, he told the panel.

Still, he “knew that he should not tell others about their relationship,” the report noted, “out of loyalty to her.”

According to the student, he and Bowen kissed on the bus and outside of a pub and had sexual encounters in her apartment.

That student reported the allegations to police in 2014, but according to the report, a police investigation “concluded with no further action.” The student then “pursued an unsuccessful appeal of this decision and a judicial review which led to no further criminal law action being taken.” In 2018, the report notes, the student brought the allegations to the Teaching Regulation Agency.

Richard Luker, who was the head of the science department in the 1980s also testified about a complaint from one victim’s mother that her son had planned to travel overseas with Bowen after the school term ended, according to The Guardian.

When questioned by police, Bowen denied sexually abusing the student, saying in the report that he had created such “fantasies” because he was “besotted” with her. At the time, a representative for Bowen suggested to the panel that the student was “infatuated” with her, which he denied.

Bowen also told police, per the report, that she considered the student a “pest, a nuisance, someone who was always getting into fights at school” and that he “generally hassled her.”

The victims, now in their 50s, later testified at Bowen’s trial.

One former student told jurors that Bowen sexually abused him “about 20 or 30 times” over several months, according to The Guardian. He said he considered her his girlfriend at the time.

“I never, ever spoke to anyone about it,” he said. “I was always really aware, she drummed it into me…Years she got to teach because I remained silent.”

He added that the abuse was “the destruction of my education.”

The other victim testified that he kissed Bowen at a café after he was “goaded” into it by his peers.

Jurors also heard from former student Tobias Oliver, who did not know the victims but recalled Bowen being “very flirtatious.” According to The Guardian, Bowen said she was not flirtatious with students and that she was “just friendly.”

Oliver remembered things differently.

“The topics of conversation in class,” he said according to the outlet, “often strayed away from chemistry and became quite sexual.”

Bowen allegedly behaved like she was in “a Sabrina Carpenter video,” he told the court, and “dressed and behaved more like my teenage female friends than the other teachers.”

When Bowen was asked in court about how she dressed at school, she responded that she “wasn’t going to dress like Margaret Thatcher” while in her mid-20s.

Wolfe declined to comment when asked by Oxygen. Attorneys for Bowen and a spokesperson for Christ’s College Finchley did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Oxygen.
