WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has rescheduled campaign rallies in two pivotal Midwestern states after previously canceling them, according to a person familiar with the plans.
The person said Friday that the Republican president is now scheduled to visit Iowa and Kansas for back-to-back rallies Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss Trump’s schedule.
When the Republican National Committee announced the cancellations, it said Trump would instead hold telerallies to reach more voters. But the person familiar with the updated plans said the Iowa and Kansas events were rearranged to make room for the additional telerallies added to Trump’s schedule.
The RNC announced Thursday evening that Trump would embark on a “72-hour sprint” of phone-based rallies rather than in-person events, saying the approach would allow him to reach voters across the country. Nearly 20 states were expected to host telerallies, with more potentially to be added.
The initial cancellations marked an abrupt change from Trump’s pledge to spend the campaign’s final days holding rally after rally to energize his supporters. By Thursday, he had held 25 rallies in October, short of the more than 30 he had once targeted.
