CNN anchor Abby Phillip was forced to play moderator Thursday night after a tense on-air clash erupted between two conservative voices on NewsNight.
The exchange pitted Caroline Sunshine, a former Donald Trump aide, against CNN senior commentator Scott Jennings in a sharp back-and-forth that quickly drew attention.
Sunshine, who previously appeared on the Disney Channel before entering politics, accused Jennings of being dishonest about phone conversations he said he had with Senator Mitch McConnell.
McConnell, the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican, was recently released from a rehabilitation facility after suffering a fall at his home on June 14. He has not yet returned to his office.
Jennings, 48, told his followers on X the next month that he had spoken with McConnell for “just shy of 20 minutes,” adding that the senator was “still recovering.”
The confrontation began after Sunshine was asked whether she believed Donald Trump’s claim that Iran is attempting to develop a nuclear weapon. Instead of answering directly, she turned her focus to Jennings.
“I don’t believe you had a phone call with Mitch McConnell… I’ll tell you that,” Sunshine said during the CNN segment.
Jennings, who has been rumored as a possible contender for White House press secretary, laughed as the studio atmosphere became increasingly strained.

After being asked if she believed the administration’s claims that Iran is attempting to build a nuclear weapon, Sunshine cast doubt on a story Jennings offered about recovering Senator Mitch McConnell, that claimed the two spoke for 20 minutes on the phone in July
Sunshine, 30, repeated: ‘I don’t believe you had a 20-minute phone call with Mitch McConnell, and I know a lot of people don’t either.’
‘Okay, we’re not going to change the subject,’ Phillip interjected, trying to keep the conversation on-track.
‘You sound like a garden variety conspiracy theorist,’ Jennings quipped back.
‘We are not going to change the subject in the middle of this,’ Phillip said, still attempting to reel the two in.
‘How is he? Have you talked to him lately?’ Sunshine pressed.
Jennings offered a curt ‘yes,’ as Phillip eagerly cued a commercial.
‘All right. Next for us, ICE arrests are soaring across the United States, but all the targets aren’t criminals,’ she segued.
‘Plus, the president trolls Canada by renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, a move that one person at this table says is aimed at stupid people. We’ll debate.’

McConnell’s office released a photo of the senator smiling alongside his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, on July 26, the second update after what many saw as a ‘proof of life’ photo from the recovering Republican.
The Kentucky senator’s office released a statement as well in which McConnell said the fall left him ‘briefly unconscious.’
‘My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages,’ McConnell said.
‘While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.
‘But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you,’ he said.
‘I’ve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between.’
The senator’s recent health issues come after multiple hospitalizations over the past few years.
He made headlines twice in 2023 for ‘freezing’ in front of gaggles of reporters.
Jennings – a former George W Bush strategist – laughed off the accusation before hurling one of his own
McConnell is currently in the midst of his final term before retirement.
He had been the longest serving Senate leader in history before his decision to step down.
As for Sunshine, she began appearing on NewsNight in June.
She made headlines that month for a viral clash with former Bill Clinton aide Keith Boykin about the administration’s current immigration policies.
Sunshine engaged in a fierce debate with ABC News contributor Tara Setmayer during a debate last month as well, about Trump’s unsuccessful bid to end birthright citizenship.
She rose to fame co-starring in the Disney Channel series Shake It Up. She joined Trump’s White House in 2018, after starring in the TV movie Mommy, I Didn’t Do It in 2017.
Like Jennings, she considers herself an ardent conservative. The Republican party is being plagued by in-fighting, as the war nears its seventh month.
