The fruit that can naturally make it easier to fall and stay asleep

It’s the middle of the night, your thoughts won’t slow down, and sleep feels frustratingly out of reach.

But before turning to sleep gummies, supplements or a nightcap, there may be a surprisingly simple bedtime snack worth considering: eating two kiwis before you go to bed.

Tara Schmidt, lead dietitian with the Mayo Clinic Diet, told Daily Mail that early findings around kiwifruit and sleep are promising, though far from conclusive.

“One small study found that eating two kiwis about an hour before bed was associated with improvements in sleep onset, duration and efficiency,” she said.

That research, published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, helped fuel growing interest in kiwi as a natural, whole-food approach that may support better sleep.

Kiwi is not a sleeping pill, and it should not be treated like one. Still, its mix of nutrients may gently influence sleep-related chemistry in the body while also offering potential benefits for mood and digestion.

Why Kiwi Could Calm an Overactive Mind

Kiwifruit’s sleep-inducing quality comes from its mix of serotonin, antioxidants and folate.

Serotonin is often linked to mood, but it also helps regulate sleep.

‘Kiwis contain high levels of serotonin, a brain chemical that helps control your sleep cycle and acts as a building block for the sleep hormone melatonin,’ said Julia Zumpano, a registered dietician at Cleveland Clinic.

In simple terms, kiwi may give the body some of the raw materials it uses to wind down.

Its Vitamin C and E content may also help counter oxidative stress, which has been tied to sleep problems, according to the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges.

Its nutrients may help create a sleep-friendly mood and mindset, making it easier for the brain to shift out of overdrive naturally.

‘Kiwifruit contains several compounds that could plausibly play a role, including antioxidants and serotonin, but we don’t have enough evidence to say that kiwi actually induces sleep or treats insomnia,’ Schmidt continued.

And while kiwi should not be framed as a direct nervous-system sedative or a cortisol-lowering treatment, research says it can improve your mood, according to a 2024 study.

Additionally, kiwi improves bowel movement regularity and reduces bloat thanks to its high fiber content.

And a better mindset and digestive system also play a role in falling and staying asleep.

What the Evidence Actually Says

The research is promising, but it is still early.

Much of the buzz comes from small studies, often based on participant reports rather than overnight lab testing.

Still, for someone with mild sleep trouble, kiwi is an easy – and natural – sleep aid experiment.

Zumpano suggests a practical approach: ‘If someone has mild sleep difficulties and likes kiwi, two green kiwifruit approximately an hour before bed for several weeks is a perfectly reasonable experiment.

‘It’s food rather than a concentrated supplement, and it provides substantial nutritional benefits regardless of whether the sleep effect materializes.’

That ‘experiment’ framing matters.

For most people, kiwi is an easy choice as a food, not a clinical treatment for chronic insomnia. Until larger, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are done, its status is best described as worth trying, not proven, experts clarify.

‘I wouldn’t tell someone with persistent insomnia that kiwi is an evidence-based treatment. The most encouraging numbers come from the smallest and least controlled studies, while the larger randomized study found subjective benefits without objective sleep improvement,’ Zumpano said.

If you are someone who likes to try natural remedies strategies over supplements or medications, that may be enough reason to test the furry fruit, experts added.

Still, Zumpano said the early findings are not meaningless.

‘That isn’t to say kiwi’s effect is necessarily tiny. The original actigraphy results are actually quite interesting, an approximately 40-minute increase in sleep time is potentially clinically meaningful.

‘The problem is that we don’t yet know whether that effect survives a sufficiently large, blinded, placebo-controlled trial,’ Zumpano continued.

Nutritional Density and Affordability

Another plus: kiwi is cheap, easy to find and nutrient-rich, offering potassium, magnesium, fiber and Vitamin C without powders, gummies or capsules.

‘Kiwi is a nutrient dense, low-calorie food, which is one reason I think its whole-food form makes more sense for long-term nightly experimentation than a concentrated sleep supplement,’ Zumpano said.

Two kiwis also deliver a strong dose of Vitamin C, about 4 grams of fiber and no added sugar, she said, emphasizing the nutrients come packaged in a whole food.

People also get phytochemicals that may also support overall health and boost immunity, according to UCLA Health.

Practical Application: The Golden Hour

For application, studies used two kiwis about 60 to 90 minutes before bedtime, giving the body time to digest and absorb the fruit’s compounds. People with sensitive stomachs may prefer eating them closer to two hours before bed.

Preparation can be simple. Peel the fruit and slice it. You can also eat the skin but be sure to scrub it clean.

To make the snack more filling and help steady blood sugar, pair kiwi with a protein like Greek yogurt or cottage cheese.

A Snack With Several Health Perks

Kiwi’s biggest selling point: even if sleep does not improve, it still delivers nutrients.

Kiwifruit may not a cure for serious insomnia, but it’s a low-cost option for people with mild sleep struggles who want a non-medicinal approach.

And there is no ‘wasted’ dose – it is an easy evening snack that supports overall wellness.

The Bottom Line

If you enjoy kiwi, eating two before bed is a low-cost, nutritionally sound intervention with encouraging preliminary evidence.

Zumpano concluded: ‘As of 2026, I’d describe the science as worth trying, not yet proven.’
