GARY, Ind. () — Indiana State Police have released additional details in the fatal police shooting of a 67-year-old security guard in Gary, Indiana.
Kenneth Williams Sr. was on duty Friday night as a security guard at the Metro station near 4th Avenue and Broadway when the deadly encounter unfolded.
According to Indiana State Police, officers from the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene around 10:54 p.m. after reports of an armed security officer behaving in an “unusual and erratic” manner.
Roughly 25 minutes later, at about 11:20 p.m., authorities said officers and Williams exchanged gunfire.
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police said nine officers in all fired their weapons during the incident, including six Gary police officers and three Lake County sheriff’s officers.
Each of the officers involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
Williams’ relatives are now calling for answers about what happened in the moments before the shooting.
“He went to work as a normal day, you know, a 67-year-old man, and he didn’t come home from work. And I want to know why,” said Kenneth Williams Jr., the victim’s son.
Another son, Raymond Brown, said the family has been left searching for answers.
“It’s my birthday, today, so I’m devastated. That’s all I can say right now. I ain’t got no answers. I just want answers,” Brown said.
No officers were reported injured.
