NYC straphanger who held emergency gate open for other riders slashed repeatedly during fight: cops, report

A Bronx subway rider who was keeping an emergency gate open for fellow commuters was repeatedly slashed during a confrontation Monday morning, police and a published report said.

The 37-year-old victim suffered knife wounds across his body after an argument escalated with a man armed with a blade inside the No. 4 train station at West 170th Street and Jerome Avenue in Mount Eden, authorities said.

According to AM NY, the man had been holding the gate open for other passengers when the dispute suddenly turned violent.

He was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, where officials said he was in stable condition.

Police said no one had been arrested in connection with the early-morning subway stabbing.

The incident unfolded only days after another troubling Bronx subway attack, in which police said a stranger pushed an NYU security guard on her way to work onto the train tracks without warning.

That victim, identified by her cousin as 65-year-old Lydia Zuniga, was waiting on the northbound No. 5 train platform at East 180th Street and Morris Park Avenue in Van Nest around 1:40 p.m. when the attacker came up behind her without saying a word and shoved her onto the roadbed, police said.

Investigators and sources said the man later went to a psychiatric clinic and admitted what he had done.

The 29-year-old menace had not yet been formally charged by Monday.
