VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The owner of a dog daycare near New Smyrna Beach has been arrested after employees reported finding a hidden camera in a bathroom at Dog Dayz Inn, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called Monday to the business on Edgewater Canal Road after staff members discovered what appeared to be a camera disguised inside an electrical outlet. Investigators later obtained a search warrant and opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
Sheriff’s officials said 59-year-old Donald Hemphill acknowledged placing the camera in the bathroom about four to five months earlier. Detectives also reported finding multiple video files on his phone showing women in “stages of undress.” Authorities said one of the people recorded was a child.
According to deputies, an image located on Hemphill’s phone helped investigators identify the outlet where the hidden camera was installed.
Hemphill is facing 10 counts of digital voyeurism and 11 counts of video voyeurism involving a child. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he is being held without bond.
Body-worn camera video released in the case showed Hemphill being placed under arrest.
Dog Dayz Inn said in a Facebook post Tuesday that the facility will stay closed until further notice. The business asked customers with dogs currently boarded there to call for the latest updates.
