A Tennessee man is facing serious charges after authorities say he attacked his mother with a baseball bat inside her bedroom during a dispute over her not preparing food for him.

Deangelo Billingsley, 27, is charged with criminal attempted second-degree murder and domestic assault causing bodily harm, according to Shelby County court records reviewed by Law&Crime. He remains in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $52,000.

The alleged attack happened Saturday at a residence on Bonita Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, where Billingsley and his mother had been arguing. Investigators say the disagreement centered on the defendant wanting something to eat.

According to an affidavit of complaint filed in the case, the argument was about “her not cooking him any food,” and the woman told police it “quickly escalated into Billingsley physically assaulting her.”

Authorities allege Billingsley entered his mother’s bedroom “and charged at her with a bat.” After a brief struggle, he allegedly “overpowered her and struck her in her head with the bat.”

The woman sustained a laceration to her forehead.

Memphis Police Department officers responded to the home after the woman reported that her son had assaulted her. Police said she was taken to a nearby hospital with “critical” injuries and identified Billingsley as the person who attacked her.

Billingsley was arrested.

The defendant “admitted to grabbing an aluminum bat from his bedroom and charging at [his mother] with it,” according to the court document. He also apparently conceded that they “fought over the bat” before he “regained full possession” of it and “struck” his mother in the head.

“Billingsley advised that the altercation started due to Banks not getting him any food,” authorities added. The suspect was booked into jail.

He is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing on Tuesday.
