An 11-year-old boy lost his life in a tragic go-kart accident in upstate New York after the vehicle overturned into a pond, leaving him trapped beneath it underwater.
Parker Mitchell was riding in the go-kart with his 8-year-old sister, Teagan, in Darien, New York, last Sunday. The vehicle rolled into a nearby pond at approximately 2:30 p.m., according to The Democrat and Chronicle.
Parker became pinned beneath the overturned kart. Emergency responders pulled him from the water and transported him to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died—just days before he was scheduled to begin middle school, authorities said.
Teagan escaped from the wreck and was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene before being reunited with her family, local officials said.
Parker, who lived in Greece, New York, was an active young athlete who participated in youth football and baseball. His obituary described him as someone with “a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome.”
His family said Parker possessed a “curious spirit and a wonderful sense of adventure” and treasured the time he spent with relatives and friends.
“He truly excelled at everything he did. He had a good heart, and his kindness left an impression on the people fortunate enough to meet him,” his obituary states.
Parker was also a devoted Buffalo Bills supporter who enjoyed video games and exploring the outdoors, according to his loved ones.
“His life was short, but his impact will last forever,” his obituary said.
Friends of the Mitchell family have launched an online fundraiser to help provide financial support during their devastating loss.
