Massive fire rips through NYC restaurant, injuring 6 firefighters

A four-alarm fire ripped through a Brooklyn commercial building housing three restaurants Saturday, injuring six firefighters, officials said.

The blaze broke out at a restaurant in a building on North 5th Street between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street in Williamsburg shortly before 5:30 p.m., CBS New York reported.

All three restaurants in the building were evacuated, including Juliette, a neighborhood fixture that has operated for more than 20 years.

FDNY officials said during a news conference that the fire spread from one restaurant into the two adjoining eateries.

About 35 minutes after firefighters began battling the flames, a smoke explosion prompted crews to issue a Mayday call, according to the FDNY.

No restaurant customers were inside the building when the explosion occurred.

Firefighters also faced a localized roof collapse, forcing them to leave the building temporarily before reentering to continue putting out the fire.

The massive Williamsburg blaze was brought under control at about 8:30 p.m., fire officials said.

“I saw a big cloud of fire basically burst out of … the restaurant Juliette,” one witness told the outlet.

Six firefighters suffered minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment, the FDNY said.

No additional injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Department of Buildings was at the scene to assess the building’s structural integrity following the blaze.
