Republican Senate hopefuls Mike Rogers of Michigan and Ashley Hinson of Iowa on Monday urged a swift end to the war in Iran while outlining temporary measures to ease rising fuel prices.
“The war with Iran needs to end and end quickly,” Rogers said in a video message. He added that energy prices would “plummet” once the conflict ends, but warned that Michigan families cannot afford to wait for that relief.
Rogers proposed temporarily stopping U.S. diesel exports, saying the move would keep more fuel in the domestic market and reduce costs for farmers and truck drivers.
“Diesel fuels the trucks that bring groceries to the store. It fuels the tractors that grow our food,” Rogers said. “And when diesel costs more, it costs more to grow it, ship it, stock it, and ultimately buy it.”
He also renewed his call to suspend state and federal gasoline taxes, a move he said would save drivers 70 cents per gallon.
Hinson likewise backed suspending the gas tax and pausing diesel exports. Her proposals also include expanding E15 fuel, restoring the $1-per-gallon biodiesel tax credit and establishing a diesel assistance program for farmers and truckers.
“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran,” Hinson wrote on X. “We need to use every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices.”
Hinson said any suspension of the gas tax should be paired with new funding for the highway trust fund, ensuring that Iowa’s roads and bridges do not lose financial support.
“These actions to lower costs are needed ASAP, and the war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end,” she wrote.
