Two University of Mississippi students have died as authorities investigate possible drug-related circumstances, officials confirmed to Fox News Digital.
Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said in a news release that investigators are examining the deaths of two college-aged people who were found at separate locations. While authorities have not determined whether the cases are connected, packaged kratom purchased from a retail store was recovered during both investigations.
The agency cautioned that there is currently no confirmed evidence that kratom or any other substance contributed to either death.
The University of Mississippi confirmed in a statement to Fox News Digital that both individuals were enrolled as students.
“The University is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” a campus spokesman said.
