The man accused of killing a Pittsburgh pediatrician and critically injuring the doctor’s wife in a midnight home invasion allegedly sexually assaulted another woman in public just hours earlier.
Elijah Hemingway, 32, allegedly ambushed the woman Wednesday morning as she walked along a path leading to an alley in Wilkinsburg, the Allegheny County Police Department said in a Facebook post Saturday.
Police also allege that Hemingway took the woman’s cellphone during the encounter.
Authorities said the woman had not known Hemingway before the alleged assault.

Wilkinsburg police alerted Allegheny County detectives, who investigated the alleged sexual assault in addition to the homicide case.
Detectives found “multiple items connecting Hemingway to the reported sexual assault,” as well as the victim’s cellphone, which had been reported stolen, county police said.
After consulting the district attorney’s office, county police filed additional charges against Hemingway, including rape, sexual assault and robbery.

The Wilkinsburg attack occurred just outside Edgewood, Pennsylvania, where Hemingway allegedly entered a home and stabbed a sleeping couple early Thursday morning—only hours later.

The pediatrician killed in the attack was identified as Dr. Idris Evans, 46. First responders took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the police report, Hemingway allegedly attacked the couple while wearing only his underwear. Evans’ wife told investigators that he appeared “psychotic” and claimed to be “God” during the incident.
As the couple struggled with the attacker, Evans’ wife called for their children, ages 8 and 12, to leave the house, the report said.
She also told police that Evans called the attacker “Elijah,” suggesting that he knew him. County authorities later told KDKA they could not confirm whether Evans and Hemingway had an existing relationship.
Evans’ wife said she did not know Hemingway and was uncertain how he got inside the home.

Police said Hemingway’s account of the night conflicted with the evidence gathered during the investigation.
Hemingway told investigators that Evans had invited him to the home several hours earlier and let him inside, according to the police report. He also claimed Evans attacked him with a knife and said he suffered a stab wound to his back.
Authorities said they found no stab wound on Hemingway’s back. They also were unable to find the bicycle he claimed to have ridden to the house.
Hemingway faces seven charges related to the Thursday attack, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and trespassing.
Court records show that Hemingway, who has a criminal history dating back to 2016, was released without bail in July in connection with a February burglary.
