A woman says she traveled across the world to meet a man she had connected with on a dating app—only to learn after landing that he still had feelings for his former partner.
Zena Wozniak, 37, of Los Angeles, shared the painful experience in a recent post on Substack.
In the post, which has since gone viral, Wozniak said she met the man—identified only by the pseudonym Charlie—on Tinder in 2022.
She described him as tall, self-deprecating and strikingly similar to one of her longtime celebrity crushes, musician Paolo Nutini.
“I swiped right, hopeless that we would match. But to my surprise, it was instant,” she wrote.
Charlie told her he lived in England but was in San Francisco for a work conference. The pair soon arranged to meet in person.
They spent a whirlwind weekend together, going on several dates and hooking up multiple times before Wozniak returned to Los Angeles.
The chemistry felt immediate. Wozniak said Charlie was the “most attractive” and “most emotionally intelligent” man she had ever dated.

“Charlie and I spent the entire weekend together without a hitch. We both remarked how natural it felt to be in one another’s company,” she recalled.
As the weekend came to an end, Charlie suggested visiting Los Angeles the following weekend. He had no plans after the conference and wanted to see the desert. “Please do come,” Wozniak told him, while privately imagining that he might stay for good.
Charlie followed through, traveling to LA to see her. The two spent several more enjoyable days together.
After he left, Wozniak assumed their time together might be over. But over the next few weeks, she said she could not stop thinking about him. She began organizing a six-week European vacation that would include a visit to London.
Wozniak contacted Charlie to say she was considering a visit and asked whether she could stay at his home for a week.
Instead, he asked whether she could extend the stay to 10 days. He reportedly planned to take her to Kent, which he described as his favorite place in the world.
Wozniak said she was so eager to see him again that she increased her workouts, hoping to look her best for the reunion.
“I prepared for that trip like it was the crowning athletic event of my career. I power walked for an hour every day,” she wrote.

While she was admittedly disappointed that she had flown across the globe to see a man who was no longer interested in her, Wozniak said she preferred him breaking the news to her there in person rather than before she arrived
‘I worked out with weights and did yoga and Pilates and intermittent fasted. I got my hair done and lashes permed.
‘I bought an impossibly sexy red dress with a low cut back that my tits and a** looked great in.’
She and Charlie talked nonstop in the weeks before the trip, but when she jetted off to Spain for the first part, he started to grow distant.
‘In the six weeks leading up to the trip, Charlie and I hadn’t been in constant contact … We touched base once a week or so, sending pictures of what we were up to or making plans for our time together,’ she said.

‘These exchanges were always optimistic and affectionate. But the doubt started to creep in, insidiously, the closer our reunion got. We had barely spoken since I announced my arrival in Spain.’
Wozniak explained that she assumed she was just being ‘insecure and paranoid’ and so she decided to give him space.
Later that week, Wozniak said she went onto his Tinder profile and noticed that his location had changed to Kent, where he was initially planning to take her during their time together. She theorized that he had ended up taking his ex-girlfriend instead, which left her even more heartbroken
‘Knowing I had already flown across the world to see him, the last thing I wanted was for him to feel encroached upon so I intentionally left space to let him lead,’ she said.
The night before she was supposed to fly to London she ‘finally’ got a message from Charlie asking for her flight information so he could pick her up at the airport, which eased her fears.
However, as she stepped off the plane and reunited with her lover, she instantly sensed something was wrong.
‘I’ll never forget the sheepish smile on Charlie’s face when I spotted him waiting at the arrivals gate,’ she wrote.
‘He looked terrified. The expression on his face, like a teenage boy forced upon a karaoke microphone in a crowded room, desperately looking for the exits.’
She remembered him ‘seeming stressed’ the whole drive to his apartment, and incredibly ‘anxious’ when they arrived and he helped bring her things inside.
After they settled in, Charlie broke the news that he ‘couldn’t go forward with the week as planned.’
‘Things had been so stressful at work for weeks, he said. He was so overwhelmed and felt like his head was going to explode any second. The time we had in California together had been so nice and he thought it could be like that here again but he wasn’t in the same headspace as he was then,’ Wozniak explained.

‘He thought maybe it would be different but it wasn’t and he was so sorry. That he had somewhere else to stay and that I could still stay in this flat, that he would leave the keys, and I could come and go as I pleased and help myself to anything there but that he couldn’t be with me for the week.’
Wozniak felt there was more he wasn’t telling her, so she pressed and asked if he had met someone else.
That’s when he spilled that he had actually run into his ex at a party recently and had ‘realized how much he still cared about her.’
