Usha Vance briefly stumbled Monday while descending the vice president’s helicopter with her nine-week-old son.
The second lady was carrying Alec Neel Vance in a chest carrier, with a diaper bag over one shoulder. As she neared the bottom of the stairs, she held the railing with one hand and supported the baby’s head with the other before appearing to miss a step.
Four service members standing on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews watched as Usha reached for the second railing and quickly recovered her balance.
A short time later, Vice President JD Vance stepped off the helicopter carrying the couple’s 4-year-old daughter, Mirabel. He joined Usha, who was smiling at the bottom of the stairs.
The Vances are traveling to Alaska, where the vice president is scheduled to campaign for Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska.
“As you probably saw, Usha and a couple of the kids are joining,” he told reporters on the tarmac. “This is Usha’s 50th state, which is why we are bringing a nine-week-old baby on a seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Alaska.”
“So if I give a speech tonight and I look haggard and stressed out, that’s exactly why.”
