Man pleads guilty to 2023 killing of Lauren Heike on Phoenix hiking trail

Zion Teasley has admitted to killing Lauren Heike, the 29-year-old woman whose body was discovered with multiple stab wounds along a north Phoenix hiking trail in 2023.

According to the Maricopa County Superior Court, Teasley pleaded guilty last Friday to first-degree premeditated murder and a separate sexual exploitation of a minor charge tied to conduct reported in 2019. Under the agreement, he is expected to receive a natural life sentence, while prosecutors will drop their request for the death penalty. His sentencing is set for Dec. 4.

As part of the deal, prosecutors also dismissed charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary that dated to 2020.

Following Heike’s death, a police report cited by ABC 15 said Teasley had been dealing with questions surrounding his sexuality and gender identity. Authorities previously characterized the killing as a random attack and said there was no known communication between Teasley and Heike before the incident. Teasley had also briefly been a Marine recruit after enlisting in 2019, but he was separated from training a few months later, the outlet reported.

“Our records indicate that Zion W. Teasley entered recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot San Diego on March 25, 2019. He was separated June 17, 2019, prior to completing boot camp,” the U.S. Marine Corps told ABC 15.

During questioning, Teasley told police that Heike looked like “what I would want to look like,” according to the outlet.

Detectives also found a screenshot they believed reflected Teasley’s state of mind. The image included the words, “When I see a beautiful woman and I’m a man,” ABC 15 reported.

ABC 15 further reported that Teasley had been dismissed from one job after allegedly acting “aggressive toward female employees” and was suspected of taking merchandise.

Heike was killed in April 2023, after a resident discovered her body beside a community trail. Police said she had suffered 15 stab wounds, along with injuries to her hands and forearms.

DNA evidence, surveillance footage and cellphone location data ultimately connected Teasley to the killing, investigators said.

Heike’s family had supported prosecutors’ original decision to pursue the death penalty. They later agreed to the plea deal, saying it guarantees Teasley will remain in prison for life with no possibility of release.

The condition of Heike’s clothing and the discovery of her belongings scattered along the path led investigators to believe she was chased over a barbed-wire fence during the attack.

“The suspect ran after Lauren and then sprinted away before returning to the location where Lauren’s body was found and climbing over the barbed wire,” Teasley’s probable-cause statement said.
