Wes Moore – potential 2028 White House hopeful – won’t commit to serving full term if re-elected Maryland governor

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declined to promise that he would serve the entire four-year term if voters re-elect him, making the issue a central point of Tuesday’s gubernatorial debate.

Moore, a Democrat seeking a second term in Annapolis, has said he wants to remain involved in the national political conversation. But when questioned repeatedly about whether he would stay in Maryland for the full term, he avoided giving a direct yes-or-no answer.

“Being the governor of Maryland has been the honor of a lifetime,” Moore said. “And I would not be running for re-election if I was not committed to the people of Maryland.”

He pointed to more than 1,000 visits across the state, including stops in communities that had never before hosted a Maryland governor, before turning his criticism toward Republican challenger Dan Cox and President Trump.

The moderator pressed the governor again, asking him to answer the question plainly.

“I think I gave the answer,” Moore replied. “I’m committed to the people of Maryland, and that’s why I’m running for re-election.”

Moore also defended his interest in the broader national debate, saying Maryland “deserves” to have a voice in larger political discussions and arguing that “we all need to be part of this larger conversation.”

Cox said Moore’s reluctance to make a firm commitment signals that the governor is considering a presidential campaign in 2028.

“This governor will not look you in the eyes and promise to not run for president,” Cox said. “I know you are ready to run against [Pennsylvania Gov. Josh] Shapiro and [Michigan Gov. Gretchen] Whitmer and [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom, but the people of Maryland need someone who has their concerns first.

“This governor will not commit to serving you, yet he’s asking for your vote.”

Moore’s comments marked a shift from statements he made last year during television interviews about his political future and the possibility of a 2028 presidential bid.

“I am not running,” Moore told “The View” co-host Joy Behar in May.

“Yes, I’m going to be serving a full term,” he told “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker in September.

The Maryland debate was among several gubernatorial contests held across the country Tuesday, with candidates sparring over issues ranging from technology and public safety to taxes.

In Michigan, Republican Rep. John James and Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson argued over which side stood to benefit most from data centers. Despite their differences, both candidates backed a moratorium on building additional facilities in the state.

A town hall-style gubernatorial debate in Georgia featured a disagreement over Flock surveillance cameras. Former Democratic Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms called for a pause on new installations, while Republican businessman Rick Jackson warned that reducing the cameras could lead to higher crime.

In South Carolina, Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson pledged to pursue a 0% state income tax “for everybody.” Democratic state Rep. Jermaine Johnson offered a different proposal, saying 70% of residents would not pay taxes on their wages under his plan.
