Ex-boyfriend arrested, charged after allegedly pushing young mom, baby off NYC balcony: Police

NEW YORK — A man has been arrested and charged after police said he pushed a young mother and her infant from the balcony of a New York City apartment building.

The mother died, while her 8-month-old daughter remains in critical condition, according to the New York Police Department.

Angel Carrasco, 31, faces charges including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and assault, the NYPD said.

Officers responding to a 911 call in the Bronx at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday found a 23-year-old woman, identified by police as Nathaly Ramirez, and an 8-month-old girl with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated location, according to the NYPD.

WABC reported that investigators examined a balcony on the building’s 15th floor for evidence.

After further investigation, police determined that the mother and child had allegedly been pushed from the balcony, the NYPD said.

Ramirez and her daughter were taken to Jacobi Hospital. The infant remained in critical condition, police said, while Ramirez was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the NYPD.

Police said a close friend of Carrasco’s went to investigators and provided information about where he was hiding. Members of the Regional Fugitive Task Force later arrested him.

Investigators said surveillance footage showed Carrasco leaving the apartment building after the incident. Detectives also found flowers inside Ramirez’s apartment and believe he brought them in an effort to reconcile following recent disputes.

The NYPD said the couple had a documented history of domestic violence. Carrasco was charged in January with slapping Ramirez during an argument involving his former girlfriend. Several days later, he faced a burglary charge after allegedly entering Ramirez’s apartment while searching for her.

Ramirez’s death has renewed attention on domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Her photograph has been placed on a wall honoring people who have died as victims of domestic violence.

“It’s a very painful moment today when we hung up Nathaly,” said Stephanie McGraw, founder and CEO of WARM, a Harlem-based domestic violence organization that supports victims.

McGraw said WARM would have assisted Ramirez and her daughter had the organization been contacted.

“We wouldn’t have asked any questions. We would have went in, we would have packed her up, we would have got her out and got her to safety,” McGraw said.
