A Florida police officer faces an aggravated battery charge after allegedly attacking her boyfriend when he said he wanted to end their two-year relationship. Investigators say she blocked him from leaving her home before scratching and biting him.

Marcia Sangronis, 38, who serves with the North Bay Village Police Department, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm, according to court documents.

The case began shortly before 10 a.m. Oct. 6, when the alleged victim ran from Sangronis’ home and flagged down two Hialeah police officers. According to a probable cause affidavit, he told officers that Sangronis had physically abused him and described what he said happened during the latest confrontation.

The man told police he and Sangronis had spent the night together. During that time, she reportedly raised concerns about his “lack of motivation to pursue a career in law enforcement.” He said discussions about his career plans often caused Sangronis to become angry and violent, leading him to keep those conversations brief and agree with her to avoid escalating the situation.

He also told investigators that he had decided to end the relationship the following morning.

According to his account, the confrontation unfolded after they woke up:

The alleged victim said Sangronis became upset when he told her the relationship was over. He said she stood in front of the doorway, preventing him from leaving. When he reached for the doorknob, she allegedly told him, “You are not allowed to leave.” He said he tried to reach the door again, at which point Sangronis allegedly began attacking him.

In a recorded interview with police, the man said that after he told Sangronis he was “done with the relationship,” she wrapped her arms around him in a bear hug and pulled him away from the doorway before biting him.

Hialeah police special victims detectives investigated the report, while a Criminal Investigations Division technician documented the alleged victim’s injuries. Police photographed three bite marks on his left arm, including one that broke the skin, as well as multiple scratches on his body, arms and face.

Sangronis also spoke with investigators, but that section of the arrest affidavit remains redacted.

The North Bay Village Police Department said Hialeah police informed the agency of the arrest. Sangronis was “relieved of duty with pay per our agency’s protocols,” the department told local station WPLG in a report.

“The North Bay Village Police Department holds all its personnel to the highest standards of conduct and fully accountable for their actions on and off duty,” the department said.

Sangronis was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and later released after posting $1,000 bond. A judge ordered her to have no contact with the alleged victim as a condition of her release.

Court records did not immediately indicate when Sangronis is scheduled to appear in court again.
