Texas Senate candidate James Talarico resurfaces after 13-day absence

Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has reappeared at an Austin music festival after a puzzling absence from the campaign trail triggered speculation and calls for a “proof of life.”

Talarico, 37, was seen moving through crowds at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Friday, ending a 13-day stretch away from public view during a pivotal stage of his effort to turn Texas blue.

The Democrat is facing Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in a closely watched Texas Senate race. His campaign has said he was sidelined by the flu.

Still, the timing of his disappearance raised questions among Republicans and Democrats alike. Several public appearances and high-dollar private fundraisers were called off as the final weeks of the campaign approached.

After days of growing scrutiny over his whereabouts, Talarico now appears ready to resume his public campaign activities.

“James Talarico is back on the campaign trail talking to voters at Austin City Limits,” campaign spokesman JT Ennis told NBC News.

Videos shared on social media showed the Senate hopeful walking around the festival grounds Friday, in what was reported to be his first public campaign appearance in more than a week.

His return follows a sustained series of jabs from Paxton’s campaign, which turned the Democrat’s absence into a political punchline and even organized a tongue-in-cheek search for him.

Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico, 37, finally resurfaced at Austin City Limits Music Festival after a 10-day absence from the campaign trail.

In his last public appearance on September 30, Talarico spoke with Hispanic voters via Zoom, informing them he could not attend the event in person due to having the flu

During his last public appearance on September 30, Talarico addressed Hispanic voters by Zoom and said the flu had prevented him from attending the event in person.

“We’ve tried posters. We’ve tried a formal proof-of-life request. Now we’re asking every Texan to join the search for Jimmy,” the Paxton campaign said.

The Republican campaign also created a hotline called the “Tala-Freak-Out Tip Line,” inviting Texans to report any sightings of its Democratic opponent.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz added to the ridicule by posting an image of a milk carton featuring Talarico’s photograph beneath the word “MISSING.”

Talarico’s campaign has maintained that he became ill with the flu in September. However, the extended break from public events, combined with canceled fundraisers, fueled speculation about the situation—even within Democratic circles.

According to his campaign, Talarico’s last in-person appearance took place on September 29. The next day, he joined a Zoom meeting with the Hispanic Business Council in Edinburg, Texas, apologized for missing the gathering and explained that he could not attend because he was sick.

A political strategist unaffiliated with the campaign, who spoke anonymously with Our News Outlet, said the canceled appearances—particularly the private fundraising events—were concerning given the importance of the moment.

The absence came as polling suggested Talarico could be within reach of becoming the first Democrat in nearly three decades to win a statewide election in Texas.

“I wanted to dismiss the rumors, but when I heard about him canceling the fundraisers, that gave me pause. It’s crunch time. No (candidate) would be turning down money right now,” said the strategist, who has worked on Democratic and Republican campaigns in Texas and across the country.

Republicans in Washington, DC, also goaded him to surface.

‘We are starting to get worried about the little socialist, and are demanding: A video of James Talarico holding a newspaper dated today, the flight he took home from his New York fundraisers, which occurred on the very same night he allegedly went to an urgent care in Dallas [and] a doctor’s note from the Dallas urgent care he allegedly visited,’ an email blasted out to reporters by the National Republican Senatorial Committee stated.

Despite Talarico’s campaign told Our News Outlet their candidate would be back on the job this weekend.

It’s unclear what his hiatus will mean for voters or if it has damaged his campaign in any way.

An event scheduled in Austin on October 5 with black voters was among the events canceled by Talarico.

That cost the African American group $25,000 as they were unable to get money refunded for an event space that had been booked.
