PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia police officer was killed and a second officer was seriously injured after both were shot during an early Saturday morning response in West Philadelphia.
Officer Shane Seiber, 40, died at a hospital after suffering three gunshot wounds. He had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 10 years.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said Seiber’s wife and other relatives were with him at the hospital before his death.
Seiber is survived by his 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, Bethel said.
“This will be a period of mourning for us, but we will stand tall as a department and get through this together,” Bethel said.
The second officer, a 33-year-old parent of five, was shot 12 times and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
“He’s not out of the woods yet, but he is stable,” Bethel said.
Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the West Philadelphia shooting. Officials said charges are expected, but the suspect’s identity has not been made public.

Police were called to the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after 12:20 a.m. following a report of a man with a gun standing on a porch.
The officers reached the home about 30 minutes later. Soon after they stepped onto the porch, they came under gunfire.
Investigators said the suspect fled through an alley and fired repeatedly at additional officers, though none of those officers was struck.
Police launched a search and placed the neighborhood under lockdown. The suspect was eventually taken into custody after falling from a tree, officials said.
Officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun. Bethel said one of the handguns belonged to one of the wounded officers.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in memory of Officer Seiber.
