Two Arrested After Police Find Stolen Gun in Their Vehicle

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Torey Jeremiah Cobb, 24, and Joshua Williams Singleton, 25, were arrested late October 10 after officers reportedly found a stolen firearm inside their vehicle during a traffic stop.

The Gainesville Police Department stop began at approximately 9:55 p.m. after an officer observed that the vehicle’s tag lights were not working. Cobb, who was driving, reportedly said he did not have identification but told the officer the vehicle was registered in his name. A records check using his name and date of birth showed that Cobb’s driver’s license had been suspended since March. According to the report, Cobb acknowledged knowing about the suspension because his license had been checked during an earlier traffic stop.

The officer arrested Cobb on suspicion of knowingly driving with a suspended license. The officer also reported smelling burnt marijuana coming from Cobb. Cobb and Singleton, the passenger, reportedly said they did not possess medical marijuana cards. After Singleton was removed from the vehicle, he allegedly produced a baggie containing approximately 8.4 grams of marijuana and said it belonged to him.

An American Tactical pistol was reportedly visible on the driver’s-side floorboard. A subsequent search allegedly uncovered a second firearm, a CZ Scorpion pistol, beneath a tarp behind the driver’s seat. After checking the weapons’ serial numbers, the officer reportedly determined that the CZ Scorpion had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Gainesville in April 2025.

After being read his Miranda rights, Cobb reportedly denied knowing the stolen firearm was in the vehicle and said he did not know how it got there. He later stated that the gun did not belong to him.

Singleton also reportedly denied ownership of the stolen firearm after receiving his Miranda warning.

Cobb faces charges of grand theft of a firearm and driving with a suspended license. Authorities reported no local criminal history for Cobb. Judge James Colaw set his bail at $2,000.

Singleton was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, grand theft of a firearm, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. His record includes juvenile convictions from 2017 and 2018, four adult felony convictions described as nonviolent, and two adult misdemeanor convictions, including one classified as violent. Judge Colaw set Singleton’s bail at $76,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
