Eight adults in Kentucky have been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged abuse of seven children who lived in the same Richmond home.

The Richmond Police Department said in a press release that the suspects — 41-year-old Christine Carter, 21-year-old Johnna Carter, 45-year-old Richard Carter, 28-year-old Sarah Carter, 21-year-old Ishmeal Thornsberry, 63-year-old Green Schindler, 30-year-old Mark Brumbaugh and 30-year-old Matthew Brumbaugh — were arrested Friday. The arrests followed an investigation into the alleged abuse of seven children ranging in age from 1 to 17.

Court documents obtained by local Fox affiliate WDKY said the children were removed from a Richmond, Kentucky, residence where authorities described the living conditions as “very filthy and deplorable.”

Police alleged that feces and urine had been smeared across the floors, stairs and other surfaces throughout the home. The residence reportedly housed 15 people — the seven children and eight adults — along with 10 dogs and one cat.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed how the suspects were related to the children. All eight adults remained in custody at the Madison County Detention Center, with arraignments scheduled for Monday.

The Richmond Police Department said all seven children were placed with Social Services. The investigation includes Child Protective Services and the Department for Community Based Services, also known as DCBS.
