Fox News veteran issues dire warning to Republicans ahead of midterms

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume issued a pointed warning to Republicans before next month’s midterm elections, saying the party could face a major “washout.”

Speaking Wednesday on the network’s Special Report, Hume compared President Donald Trump’s nationwide campaign appearances for Republican candidates with former President Bill Clinton’s efforts ahead of the 1994 elections, when the GOP won unified control of Congress.

“I think the Republicans have to be concerned that this might turn out to be a bit like 1980, where the Republicans won a landslide and nobody expected it and Ronald Reagan became president,” Hume told host Bret Baier.

He then pointed to 1994, recalling how Clinton, a Democratic president, campaigned across the country much as Trump is doing now.

“Republicans that year had a program called the Contract for America. And Clinton was calling it the Contract on America,” Hume recalled.

“I was covering the White House at the time. I’ll never forget it. I thought, well, maybe he’s making headway here with this.”

Despite Clinton’s enormous platform as president and the large crowds he attracted, Hume said Democrats and the president’s party were “absolutely slaughtered” in that race. Republicans won control of the House for the first time in decades.

“The Republicans have to worry that something like that might happen to them in this race, where not only do they lose the close ones and you get a big washout,” Hume said.

“I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but I think it could happen,” he added.

Later in the interview, Hume said Trump had placed himself at the center of the Republican Party’s election strategy.

“Well, that’s fine if you’re simply trying to turn out Republicans,” he said.

But Hume said recent polling suggested Trump’s support among Republicans had declined since Election Day. He also pointed to an approval rating of about 36 percent, arguing that while Trump could motivate some voters, 64 percent disapproved of his performance.

“That is really bad at this stage, when he’s out there front and center,” Hume said. “And it may raise the question in the minds of his people whether he should be out there front and center the way he is, given his standing.”

Hume’s comments came after a new Fox News poll found that a clear majority of Americans believed Democrats were better equipped than Republicans to handle several major issues.

Democrats held leads over Republicans on foreign policy, 54 percent to 45 percent; gas prices, 55 percent to 43 percent; and inflation, 57 percent to 41 percent, according to the poll.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll likewise found that about 78 percent of Americans blamed Trump’s policies—including tariffs on imports and the US-Israeli war with Iran—for rising prices that are increasing faster than wages.

Seeking to encourage Americans to vote, Trump on Tuesday reiterated his promise to give $5,000 to every adult American.

Is it fair for Trump to promise cash payouts to win votes, or is this hurting democracy?

During his Tuesday night speech, Trump said he is ‘going to give all adult citizens in the United States $5,000’ if the Republicans hold both chambers of Congress in November.

‘You gotta spend it in the United States of America,’ the president added. ‘I don’t want you going to China.’

The president made the same promise at previous events like the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas in early September, calling it the ‘Trump Dividend.’
