Server sparks vicious debate after mocking customers who refuse to tip

A restaurant server has ignited a fierce online argument after sarcastically portraying diners who choose not to leave a tip.

Kalina Isabella shared her views on America’s increasingly contentious tipping culture in a recent TikTok video.

Speaking from her car, the content creator explained to her 26,000 followers how she believes restaurants should approach gratuity and customer service.

“I work as a restaurant server, and when people say tipping culture is ridiculous or that tipping shouldn’t be required, I completely agree,” Isabella said.

“Tipping shouldn’t be mandatory because it isn’t. People tip for good service, and that service shouldn’t be treated as something that must be purchased.”

She proposed that restaurants inform guests before the meal that a fixed percentage would automatically be added to their bill.

“If you don’t want to pay it, tell us at the start and we’ll remove it—no problem,” Isabella said.

She then adopted a mocking tone to act out how she might respond to a customer asking for additional water: “Of course—there’s a pitcher over there if you’d like to stand up and refill it yourself.”

Isabella offered several more hypothetical examples, including a guest saying: “Excuse me, I need another fork. I dropped mine on the floor.”

Her sarcastic response was: “There’s a silverware drawer in the back if you want to find one yourself.”

She also imagined a diner warning that they had a peanut allergy after noticing nuts on the dish. In response, Isabella joked: “Relaying allergies to the kitchen is a service you haven’t paid for.”

She ended the video with another pointed remark: “Give people a choice. We should be able to accommodate every person, budget and dining experience.”

“Not everyone wants to tip. Not everyone wants excellent service.”

The caption accompanying the clip added: “Tipping shouldn’t be necessary… unless you expect any level of service.”

The biting message quickly drew backlash, with viewers filling the comments section to challenge her position.

“An attitude like this makes us want to tip even less,” one person wrote.

Another commenter said refusing to communicate a customer’s food allergies based on their tipping decision was “morally reprehensible.”

“You don’t understand. Providing decent service is a server’s job, not something that should require an additional fee.”

‘Bringing more water, giving an extra fork and communication with the kitchen is literally the job, what do you think waiters get their money for?’ a third scoffed.

Earlier this year, a nationwide survey found that 78 percent of Americans believe tipping culture has become ‘ridiculous.’

Nearly half also said they have actively cut back on gratuities in 2026 as household budgets come under increasing pressure.

The findings, from restaurant technology company Popmenu, suggest a growing backlash against what many consumers see as relentless requests for extra money on top of already rising prices.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders spoke to Our News Outlet about the findings in June.

He said that consumers are increasingly frustrated by both the size of expected tips and the growing number of situations in which they are asked to leave them.
