Cute bear caught breaking into Mammoth Lakes Library in California

A curious California bear wandered into a library and launched a sticky-fingered adventure, leaving everyone to wonder whether honey was on the furry visitor’s mind.

The un-bear-lievable intruder transformed the Mammoth Lakes Library into a private reading retreat early Wednesday, exploring the building before human patrons arrived.

With the library temporarily all to himself, the bear had no crowds to navigate, no librarian to hush him and no overdue books to worry about.

The unexpected library guest immediately reminded the Mono County Office of Education of another famous woodland character — Winnie-the-Pooh, literature’s famously honey-loving bear.

“We can only assume the new Li-BEAR-ian was looking for a copy of Winnie The Pooh,” the agency joked in a social media post.

The timing made the visit even more amusing: Oct. 14 marked 100 years since Winnie-the-Pooh was first published in 1926, giving the bear’s bookish break-in an especially storybook-like twist.

Officials have not said what brought the animal indoors or whether it was actually hunting for Pooh’s adventures. And while honey was the obvious suspect, there is no word that the bear discovered any sweet treats during its library tour.

Security video showed the animal roaming the library’s upper level, where a carpeted walkway lined with books provided plenty to investigate. Still, the bear appeared more interested in exploring than preparing for a book club discussion.

The bear’s method of entry remains a mystery. Officials have not explained how it got inside, but staff members were spared a face-to-face cleanup: The furry visitor had left on its own before employees arrived.

There is also no indication that the unexpected patron borrowed a book, returned one late or departed with anything more than a possible case of the munchies.

The Mammoth Lakes branch belongs to the Mono County Free Libraries network, which includes seven locations and offers more than 180,000 physical books along with additional digital resources. That is a lot of reading material for one bear to paw through, even if this visitor preferred browsing without an appointment.

For library staff, it was an extraordinary morning surprise. Online, the encounter offered something even better: a bear that took the idea of a “bookworm” almost literally.
