Orange County Mayor Unveils $800M Tourist Tax Plan for 13 Projects

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County commissioners are preparing to review an $800 million proposal that would direct tourist tax revenue toward 13 projects across the region, including significant funding for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the town of Eatonville and the University of Central Florida.

The Dr. Phillips Center in downtown Orlando would receive the largest share of the recommended funding.

The performing arts venue had requested $750 million, but Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings is proposing a $400 million allocation. Even at that level, the center would account for nearly half of the overall package.

Supporters say expanding the arts campus could strengthen Orlando’s cultural identity and create new opportunities for the community. One supporter expressed hope that commissioners approve the proposal, pointing to the available land and the positive impact additional theater and arts space could bring to the area.

The proposed projects would be financed through Orange County’s tourist development tax, a 6% charge added to hotel stays and vacation rentals. The revenue is used for tourism promotion, entertainment venues and other initiatives intended to attract visitors. Two Eatonville projects are included in the recommendation.

The plan sets aside $60 million for a museum focused on culture and history at the Hungerford property, along with another $20 million to support the town’s heritage tourism district.

UCF is slated to receive $46 million for an expanded soccer stadium and the construction of a new track facility.

The university had also sought money for broadcast improvements and a softball stadium, but those requests were not included in the current recommendation. Other proposed investments include a children’s museum in Winter Garden, a parking garage at Camping World Stadium and additional grants supporting arts and ecotourism initiatives.

The $800 million spending plan remains subject to approval. Commissioners are scheduled to discuss the proposal Monday at 12:30 p.m.
