A National Guardsman was wounded after being shot while trying to break up a fight in Washington, DC.
The unidentified Guardsman was shot in the leg after responding to a brawl on a sidewalk in Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market neighborhood at approximately 11:10 p.m. Sunday, according to DC police.
The injured service member was among seven or eight National Guard personnel who moved in to stop the late-night confrontation.
Jeffrey Carroll, interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, said one of the people involved in the fight then “pulled out a firearm and began shooting.”
“The National Guard members told the individual to drop the firearm. He discharged a round at the National Guard members, who returned fire at that suspect,” Carroll told reporters.
