Millions brace for impact as nor'easter threatens East Coast today

A powerful nor’easter is taking shape just off the US East Coast, prompting coastal flood alerts for millions as forecasters monitor the threat of several days of hazardous weather.

The strengthening low-pressure system is already producing tropical storm-force winds across parts of the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.

Coastal flood warnings and advisories stretch from Florida to Massachusetts. AccuWeather meteorologists say the system could affect the shoreline for much of the week and may eventually acquire tropical storm or hurricane characteristics.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said the most severe coastal conditions are likely to develop near the storm’s center, including North Carolina’s Outer Banks, southeastern Virginia and beach communities in Maryland and Delaware.

Forecasters expect wind gusts reaching as high as 70mph from North Carolina to southern New Jersey on Monday and Tuesday. Coastal cities such as Atlantic City, Ocean City and Virginia Beach could be among those hardest hit.

The storm has also led to an official Storm Warning over the Atlantic for vessels traveling between 70 and 300 miles from the US East Coast near the Mid-Atlantic region.

The National Weather Service has issued Coastal Flood Advisories for parts of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey through Wednesday. More than three million people along the Atlantic coast could be affected.

High Surf Advisories are also in effect in several areas, with breaking waves of around seven to 14 feet possible. The conditions could make swimming extremely dangerous and generate powerful rip currents capable of pulling people away from shore.

Forecasters stress that the storm’s effects will remain dangerous whether or not the National Weather Service officially classifies it as a named tropical cyclone. Residents are being urged to prepare for repeated flooding, especially during high tide, over the coming days.

AccuWeather expert meteorologist Elizabeth Danco said the primary concern is not only the eventual wind speed, but also the length of time coastal communities may be exposed to damaging conditions.

“When water is driven toward the shoreline for several days, it may not have enough time to recede between high tides,” Danco explained. “That can transform a relatively manageable flood into a prolonged disruption, leaving roads underwater again and again and stripping more sand from beaches with each successive tide.”

A nor’easter is a powerful storm that develops along the US East Coast. Its name comes from the strong northeast winds that sweep across the Mid-Atlantic and New England when a low-pressure system forms over the ocean.

Although nor’easters are often associated with major snowstorms, they can develop at any time of year. The most intense systems typically occur from late fall through winter, making a storm of this strength at the start of autumn particularly unusual.

This is the second major nor’easter to affect the East Coast this fall. The first struck in late September 2026, bringing coastal flooding, powerful winds and heavy rain to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

For the current storm, the strongest winds and roughest seas are expected between Monday and Wednesday as the system moves closest to the coastline.

Several Virginia communities are expected to sit within the storm’s most dangerous zone, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Suffolk and Portsmouth.

NWS officials warned in a statement: ‘Expect up to one foot of water above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. Some roads and low-lying property including parking lots, parks and lawns near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding.’

As of Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center has given the storm a 40 percent chance of growing into a named tropical cyclone over the next week.

If it continues to linger near the warm waters of the Gulf Stream this week, it may take on more of the characteristics seen among tropical cyclones in the Caribbean and Gulf of America, potentially morphing into Tropical Storm Josephine by Friday.

While initial forecasts suggested that the storm would weaken and start moving away from the US by Thursday, AccuWeather’s latest predictions show the nor’easter becoming ‘nearly stationary’ and prolonging coastal flooding on Wednesday and Thursday.

Coastal flooding and beach erosion is expected to spread farther north along the New Jersey coast, Long Island, New York and into southern New England.
