Retired NYPD detective charged with murder in George Washington Bridge shooting of Con Ed worker: officials

A retired New York City police detective has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Con Edison worker on the George Washington Bridge, authorities said.

The NYPD identified the suspect as 62-year-old Victor Romero of Haverstraw. He is facing a murder charge in the death of 46-year-old Koran Irvine, a Valley Cottage resident and Con Edison employee.

The deadly confrontation appeared to stem from a road-rage incident involving the two Rockland County men, according to the New York Post.

Romero formerly served as an NYPD detective but left the department approximately 25 years ago, the Post reported.

The shooting was reported at about 7:18 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said Irvine was driving across the bridge when he was struck by a bullet in the shoulder. His vehicle then crashed into the median, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital, News Outlet has confirmed.

“Police responded to a 911 call of a male shot on the outbound, upper level roadway of the George Washington Bridge,” the NYPD said.

Officers found Irvine unconscious and unresponsive in the driver’s seat. Police said he had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his right shoulder.

He was transported to Englewood Hospital, where he later died, authorities said.

Irvine had recently marked 20 years with Con Edison, celebrating the milestone in a social media post published in September.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence,” the company said in a statement, according to FOX 5 New York.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues and everyone who knew and loved him.”

A fundraiser established for Irvine’s family described him as someone “full of life, love, and dedication” to those closest to him. The page said his family was his highest priority and that he worked tirelessly to support his wife, Patricia, and their children, Lea and Hiro.
