Country music star John Anderson has died at 71.

The Orlando, Florida-born singer, best known for hits including “Straight Tequila Night” and “Swingin’,” died Wednesday, according to a statement shared by his family on his Instagram account.

“With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the loss of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and best friend,” his family wrote. “To the world, he was a remarkable country singer whose voice and music touched countless people.

“To us, he was so much more: the center of our family, the person who made us laugh, loved us fiercely and turned even the simplest moments into something special.”

The family said they were “completely heartbroken” by the death of the Country Music Hall of Fame member.

“His music will live on, but his greatest legacy to us will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will cherish forever,” the statement continued. “Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Representatives for the country star told The Tennessean that Anderson died at his home in Smithville, Tennessee, on Wednesday. His cause of death had not been disclosed.

Anderson’s celebrated catalog included the 1992 hit “Seminole Wind,” followed by “Money in the Bank” in 1993 and “Bend It Until It Breaks” in 1994.

Over the course of his career, Anderson earned numerous honors, including his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

He was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. His accolades included the CMA Horizon Award and Single of the Year for his 1983 classic “Swingin’.”

His last public appearance came Sunday at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2026 Medallion Ceremony, held at the CMA Theater in Nashville.

Tributes from across the music world poured in Wednesday as news of Anderson’s death spread.

Gwen Stefani remembered the singer warmly, writing, “We loved him!! His music is part of our family’s hearts forever!! Gx.”

Jason Aldean described Anderson as one of his “all-time favorites” and recalled growing up with the singer’s records. “I grew up listening and learning to play guitar on all my dad’s old John Anderson albums,” Aldean wrote.

He added that he had been fortunate to meet and perform with Anderson several times, sending condolences to the family and calling him “a great one” who would be deeply missed.

Country singer Parker McCollum said he had met Anderson just days earlier. “I literally just met him on Sunday night. Cannot believe this,” McCollum wrote. “An absolute legend and one of the greatest to ever do it.”

‘Beyond grateful to have had the chance to shake his hand. RIP and hope they are swingin up in heaven!’

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young on Tuesday told The Tennessean that Anderson ‘was a one-of-a-kind song stylist who proved that fresh innovations were best born from time-honored traditions

‘Whether he borrowed inspiration from Lefty Frizzell’s vocal bends or the Florida swamp land, he brought dynamic distinction and creative soul to a world that needed to hear his voice.’

Young said that ‘in 1981, John famously gave life to Billy Joe Shaver’s lyric, “I’m just an old chunk of coal, but I’ll be a diamond someday.” He was already a diamond then, and a diamond he always will be.’
