An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to killing his mother-in-law during a bitter divorce and child custody dispute involving the victim’s daughter.

Jonathan Schmidt, 35, was originally charged with aggravated murder in the death of 68-year-old Marcia Van Druten, as Law&Crime previously reported.

On Wednesday, Schmidt pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and aggravated burglary, local CBS affiliate WTOL reported. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors will ask the Lucas County court to dismiss five other charges, including a second aggravated murder count.

Prosecutors said the attack occurred around 9 p.m. on April 15, when Van Druten and her husband were at their home on Fox Hollow Court in Sylvania, Ohio. The city of roughly 20,000 residents is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. On his way to the house, Schmidt reportedly stopped at a Lowe’s store, where he purchased a hammer and two crowbars.

At the time, Schmidt was involved in a contentious divorce from his wife. Authorities said he had previously threatened his mother-in-law. A witness reported in December 2025 that Schmidt said he could not guarantee he would not harm either his wife or her mother.

Schmidt was reportedly the spouse who filed for divorce. The filing came after the couple’s 15-month-old son was born prematurely while they were on their honeymoon in Hawaii.

“One of Jon’s friends reached out to [the wife] saying they had received a message from Jon saying he was going to hurt her mom,” Emily Hayman, a friend of Van Druten’s daughter, told Toledo ABC affiliate WTVG in April. “And that terrified [the wife], so [she] tried calling her mom multiple times, and when her mom didn’t answer, she got scared and called her dad, and the phone was next to him so he heard the phone. He went downstairs and found her.”

According to authorities, Schmidt forced his way into the home by using a crowbar to smash through sliding glass doors. Van Druten was sitting in a downstairs chair while her husband slept on the floor above when Schmidt entered, prosecutors said.

A camera positioned behind the home recorded the sound of shattering glass, followed by Van Druten screaming Schmidt’s name, WTOL reported, citing prosecutors. The screams suddenly stopped. Her husband later discovered her dead, with a crowbar lying on top of her body.

Investigators found blood spatter throughout the room. Van Druten was pronounced dead from multiple blunt-force injuries.

Schmidt fled the area but was arrested the following morning in La Salle, Michigan, approximately 25 miles northeast of the Sylvania crime scene. He reportedly told several people that he had killed Van Druten. Investigators also found shards of glass in his hood and pockets.

Schmidt faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 23.

Van Druten’s obituary said her life “revolved around her family.”

She “was more than a grandmother — she was a teacher, a cheerleader, a caregiver, an adventurer, and a coveted friend,” the obituary said. “She was with her grandchildren more hours than she wasn’t and their loss of Nammy will be deeply felt forever, as will all the lessons she taught them.”
