Trump tells Iowa crowd he 'has the right' to run for a third term

President Donald Trump again suggested he could seek a third term, telling supporters at a Thursday night rally in Iowa that he believes he “has the right” to run again.

Trump has repeatedly floated the possibility of another presidential campaign, even though the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment explicitly limits presidents to two elected terms.

His supporters have argued that the comments are intended to provoke Democrats, pointing to his frequent distribution of “Trump 2028” hats at rallies.

He revived the subject Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa, telling the crowd, “I don’t know who’s going to be your next President.”

“And I think the law said—I’m not 100 percent sure—I’m not allowed to run again,” Trump said, drawing boos from the audience.

The President then cited recent polling, claiming, “I’d kill everybody, I’d beat ’em.”

“I’ve studied that phrase forever, unfortunately it’s quite concise, there’s not a lot of wiggle room,” he continued. Trump began describing the constitutional restriction before shifting his argument.

“Well, the one thing is different. They cheated us on the second one because we won it three times. So I think I have the right to run again,” he declared. “I think I have the right to run again, because they cheated.”

Trump has falsely insisted that he defeated Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, although no evidence has emerged of widespread fraud.

Recent polling has placed Trump near a second-term low in public support, approaching levels recorded after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, which was fueled by his false claims about election fraud.

Trump traveled to Iowa to support Republican Senate candidate Representative Ashley Hinson, whose race against Democrat Josh Turek was tied in recent polling.

Polling also showed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand leading his Republican opponent, Zach Lahn.

Trump carried Iowa in all three of his appearances on the ballot, after voters in the state had twice backed Democratic President Barack Obama.

Trump opened Thursday’s rally in western Iowa by praising the state’s farmers and telling the crowd how much he valued them.

He soon broadened his remarks, moving on to other political issues and races across the country.

Trump also attacked Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, suggesting she should not serve in Congress because, he claimed, she used a “fake name” when taking her oath. He continued to repeat the false allegation that she married her brother.

Should a president¿s claims of election fraud justify ignoring term limits for another run?

The President also heightened his support of a controversial campaign ad being run by Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy.

Ramaswamy is under fire for green-lighting a spot that stars the estranged mother of his Democratic rival, Dr. Amy Acton.

A grand jury found that Acton’s stepfather sexually abused her as a child and she was taken out of her mother’s custody at age 12.

‘I said, you gotta ride with it,’ Trump said he encouraged Ramaswamy.

He blasted the controversy and the press for asking questions about it.

‘You mean you have a mother that said terrible things about, who knows, the daughter? She really said she was a horrible liar? I mean, it was crazy. And he made a commercial, he put it up, like I would do, like most people would do,’ Trump said.

The President then said he was confronted with a ‘massive scrum of press’ who were going ‘crazy’ about it, pinpointing one journalist from ABC News.

‘This woman starts screaming. I recognize her immediately. Not a particularly attractive person inside or out. In fact, I just am amazed that these people could be reporters or anchors,’ Trump said.
