Disneyland experienced an unexpected real-life water ride Friday night as a sudden downpour flooded walkways, soaked popular lands and disrupted outdoor attractions across the Anaheim theme park.
An intense 15-minute cloudburst overwhelmed sections of the California resort, sending water rushing across pedestrian paths and forcing visitors to scramble to protect their shoes from the rising floodwater.
The National Weather Service had forecast roughly 25 millimeters of rain across Southern California on Friday. However, the abrupt deluge caught some Disneyland guests by surprise as storm drains struggled to handle the volume of water.
Videos shared online showed ankle-deep water outside Frontierland’s Pioneer Mercantile and Shooting Exposition. Stranded visitors navigated along garden edges and climbed onto benches in an effort to stay above the flooding.
“The Rivers of America just expanded into Frontierland,” one Disneyland California visitor commented on Instagram.
Additional footage showed large pools of standing water in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and near the Haunted Mansion, leaving frustrated guests to make their way through the park in increasingly soggy conditions.
“My weather app said no rain for 6 hours. 45 minutes later it said heavy rain in 18 min. Then it said ‘flash flood warning’! Totally out of no where,” one visitor wrote on Instagram.
Another guest’s video of the storm spread widely online, capturing the frustration of being caught in the sudden rain without adequate protection.
“Bro I came to Disneyland the wrong day it fr wasn’t supposed to rain today. Bro I didn’t even have a hoodie or an umbrella, my feet were soaked n I was all wet bro.”
In Fantasyland, stormwater backed up between Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn Bobsleds, turning pedestrian lanes into fast-moving streams. Shade canopies over outdoor dining areas also overflowed, sending sheets of water onto the seating below.
Disneyland Cast Members responded with brooms and squeegees, working to clear blocked drains and remove debris as floodwater threatened to spread through more areas of the park.
“A brave Cast Member is unclogging the drain as we speak,” one visitor reported from a sheltered landing. “Our dry shoes, our socks, and the future of Frontierland are in your hands.”
The flooding also reached the resort’s main transportation areas. Standing water collected around the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking tram terminals, making late-night departures more difficult for families, including those with strollers.
“Barely made it to the car before the crazy downpour happened,” one Disneyland visitor commented on Instagram.
Disneyland management temporarily halted outdoor rides after lightning was detected over Orange County. The evening fireworks show was also cancelled because of strong winds, heavy rain and lightning concerns.
Operations crews worked into the night to remove debris and pump out standing water as they prepared the resort to handle weekend crowds.
