Poor Prince William. His appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday was a showcase of easy, effortless royal charm. Relaxed, witty and refreshingly down to earth, he radiated warmth and optimism—and looked undeniably handsome while doing it. By the end of the interview, his fellow guests seemed completely won over.
It offered a striking contrast to the more sombre tone of his younger brother’s interview with GQ earlier in the week. Prince Harry spoke about wanting to repair relations with his family, but added the decidedly pessimistic observation that “some people don’t want it to work out.”
William should have emerged as the clear winner. Despite Harry’s suggestion that his resemblance to their mother has diminished, there were unmistakable glimpses of Diana’s humour and mischievous spirit in his performance. Yet, as so often happens, attention was swiftly redirected by sensational news concerning the Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle Sr. Once again, the royal conversation has been overtaken by a major Sussex family drama.
This time, however, the controversy was not caused by the Sussexes themselves. The allegations were made by Thomas Markle Jr, Meghan’s half-brother, who said he discovered disturbing material involving underage girls on a computer at his father’s property in Cebu, the Philippines.
Thomas Markle Sr has categorically rejected the allegations. Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, has also defended him and accused her brother of pursuing publicity and financial gain. She has suggested that because the computers had reportedly been in storage for two years, the material could have been placed there by someone else.
Samantha has described her brother as “disgusting”, pointing to his previous arrests, including an allegation that he held a gun to his girlfriend during an argument while intoxicated. It is an extraordinary family dispute, made all the more complicated by the fact that few members of Meghan’s extended family have emerged from past controversies with much credit.

Sarah Vine argues that William’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show should have been a triumph. Instead, public attention has turned to another explosive Sussex family controversy.

For the Sussexes, the circumstances are considerably more complicated—and more painful—when viewed alongside the continuing controversy surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
The situation became even more complex after Meghan issued a statement saying that, around the time of her wedding, a letter containing “troubling and disturbing allegations” had been sent to the Metropolitan Police and its royal protection unit. She said the letter was later passed to her and Prince Harry, a sequence of events the Met has confirmed.
Meghan also criticised press coverage questioning her decision to end contact with her father. “I hope it can now be understood,” she said, “that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father… was for one reason: to protect them [her children].”
Some commentators have noted the apparent tension between that explanation and Meghan’s description of herself as “a Daddy’s Girl” in the couple’s 2022 Netflix documentary. Even so, given the seriousness of the claims, it is reasonable to allow room for the possibility that the situation was far more complicated than it appeared publicly. Allegations involving the sexual abuse of children are, by their nature, profoundly disturbing.
No charges have been brought against Thomas Markle Sr in connection with the allegations. Nevertheless, the suggestion that someone may be linked to such claims is deeply unsettling. It remains unclear who sent the letter to police—it may have been anonymous—but receiving or learning about it must have been extraordinarily distressing for Meghan.

Even an unproven allegation of this kind can trigger intense speculation and damaging rumours. That distress affects not only the person accused, but also relatives and everyone connected to the situation.
I understand something of that impact after recently dealing with the consequences of a comparable accusation. My former husband’s previous partner was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service with possessing Category B and C images of children, allegations she denies. She had met both of my children, and my daughter had babysat for her young child. The charges emerged suddenly a few weeks ago, leaving me shocked and still struggling to process the nightmare.
Telling my children was one of the most difficult responsibilities I have faced as a parent. So too was confronting the fact that something so toxic could come close to my family.

For Meghan, this is her own father. The possibility that a man who played such an important role in her childhood could have a darker side must be extraordinarily difficult to comprehend.
At least in my case the woman involved was not a blood relative. For the Sussexes—and, by extension, the wider Royal Family—the consequences are far more complicated and painful, particularly in light of the continuing controversy surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Although he has never faced criminal charges, he has been stripped of his royal status and associations.
The presence of one person facing allegations of sexual misconduct would be devastating enough for any family. The prospect of two is almost impossible to contemplate.
For Meghan, this is not an abstract family connection but her father—a man she has spoken about warmly in interviews and on her former lifestyle blog, The Tig. She has credited him with working tirelessly and making considerable financial sacrifices to support her university education. She has also described his encouragement of her acting career and his use of professional contacts as a Hollywood lighting engineer to help her pursue it.
The idea that a parent who played such a formative role might have a hidden and troubling side would be deeply unsettling for anyone. The pain lies not only in the nature of the allegations, which remain unproven, but in the possibility that someone once loved and trusted may not be who they seemed. That kind of revelation can shake a person’s entire sense of reality, and its emotional consequences are impossible to predict.
In the past, it’s fair to say that the Sussexes have at times exaggerated the hardships they have faced. But there is no doubt in my mind that this is a genuine trauma. While you can forgive someone for making a fool of themselves by saying stupid things to the Press, or acting like an idiot for the cameras, what Thomas Sr now stands accused of is unforgivable.
I only hope for all their sakes that what Meghan’s half-sister says is true, and that all this really is just a nasty lie made up by a twisted son to punish his sick father for cutting him off financially.
Either way, in the end the truth always comes out.
