Mark Chapman might be expected to be happier than ever after reports emerged that he is dating his glamorous Match of the Day co-star, Kelly Cates.
However, viewers said the BBC presenter looked “bored rigid” while hosting the BBC One football programme on Saturday night, joking that he appeared to be “counting down the days until he can collect his pension.”
Known affectionately as Chappers, the Radio 5 presenter opened the show by introducing former England internationals Martin Keown and Steph Houghton before beginning coverage of Aston Villa’s match against Manchester City.
Yet insiders claimed Chapman’s subdued expression and low-key delivery became one of the main talking points of the programme.
Sources have suggested that his mood may be linked to a strained relationship with his boss, BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski.
People familiar with the presenter’s position claimed Chapman “can’t stand” Kay-Jelski or his approach to running the BBC’s sports department, particularly after unpopular cuts were made to the team last month.
“Mark cannot stand Alex,” a source told Our News Outlet. “He strongly dislikes what Alex is doing with the BBC’s entire sports operation.”

Mark Chapman’s “tense” relationship with the BBC Sport boss is said to have contributed to his “subdued” appearance on Match of the Day, Our News Outlet can reveal

Sources claim Chapman’s strained relationship with his boss, BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski, has contributed to his low mood
“The cuts introduced by Alex have created a terrible atmosphere across the department. Production teams have been left devastated, and Mark is close to many of those affected,” the source said.
“The misery behind the scenes has now spilled over into what viewers see on camera.”
The claims come after the BBC ended Football Focus after 52 years, with Alex Scott presenting the programme as the corporation seeks to save £500 million by 2028.
Kay-Jelski denied that the decision formed part of the cost-cutting programme. Instead, he described it as part of “the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content to reach fans wherever they are.”
The BBC has faced mounting pressure over a series of cuts. Earlier this week, bosses announced 100 redundancies at BBC News and confirmed that BBC Scotland and BBC Three would move to online-only services.
Staff have warned that “the worst is yet to come.” Leaders also discussed merging CBBC with fellow children’s channel CBeebies, although executives rejected the proposal, saying they did not want to undermine the corporation’s commitment to children’s public service media.
Chapman took over from Gary Lineker as one of the presenters of the football show in August 2025, alongside Cates and Gabby Logan.
The trio were selected by Kay-Jelski. Despite giving Chapman the presenting opportunity, however, Match of the Day sources claimed the pair remain bitterly opposed to one another.
The alleged tension fuelled a wave of criticism on social media during Saturday night’s broadcast.

Chapman might be expected to be at his happiest after reports that he is dating glamorous Match of the Day co-star Kelly Cates
One viewer wrote: “Football is supposed to be fun. For God’s sake, can somebody tell Match of the Day?”
‘Just look at the way Mark Chapman opens the show. Flat. Lifeless. Almost uninterested.
‘Watching Match of the Day these days is like observing a post-mortem conducted by a forensic pathologist who regretted his career choice years ago and is now just counting down the days until he can collect his pension.
‘His dry, bored, dead-eyed delivery is sucking the life out of a programme devoted to a sport that should be anything but lifeless.’
Another viewer simply added: ‘Like a lot of things in modern football Match of the Day has died a long and painful death.’
After Chapman split from his Dubai-based estate agent girlfriend of three years, Clere Collier, in April he and his new co-host Ms Cates are said to have grown closer during their time in Atlanta at the football World Cup this summer, while covering England’s ill-fated semi-final against Argentina, that sparks really flew.
Last Sunday, Ms Cates, 51, was seen being picked up from Chapman’s Manchester home last Sunday morning with a suitcase following them being spotted walking into work at Media City, Salford, the day before.
