The 33-year-old has been a prominent member of Sunrise’s ratings-leading team since joining the show permanently in 2023. During that time, she has reported from around Australia and overseas on major sporting events, entertainment stories and breaking news.
However, Brown is now reportedly looking to reconnect with her sporting background. The Daily Telegraph reports that her current contract is due to conclude on December 31.
Although she is set to step back from her full-time Sunrise duties, Brown is expected to remain part of the Seven network in a more flexible position. The arrangement would give her room to pursue new opportunities in sports broadcasting.
The change could mark an important new phase in Brown’s career. Before becoming a familiar face to breakfast television audiences, she established herself as a rugby league reporter.
Her connection to the game also extends to the field. Brown previously played for South Sydney’s NSWRL Women’s Premiership team and received the players’ player award in 2021.
Sunrise reporter Katie Brown is preparing to leave her full-time breakfast television role and return to sports journalism, with the Channel Seven presenter expected to take on a hybrid position in 2027.
Brown later moved into sports media, working for regional television networks before joining the NRL in 2021 to oversee coverage for the organisation’s website.
After three years with the NRL, she returned to television, taking up a senior NRL journalist position with Seven’s Brisbane newsroom.
She has also presented a program on SEN, building experience across several areas of sports broadcasting.
The presenter has already begun exploring what comes next. Last weekend, she made her sideline reporting debut in Perth as part of Seven’s coverage of the Rugby League World Cup.
Brown is expected to remain involved throughout the tournament, giving her another chance to demonstrate her abilities as a sports reporter and presenter.
Her decision to reduce her Sunrise commitments comes during a period of change for sports coverage across Australian breakfast television.
At Nine, Danika Mason recently left her role presenting the sports segment on Today. She is expected to return to lead the network’s NRL coverage next season after taking maternity leave.
For Brown, the move represents a return to the sporting world that helped shape her career, while still keeping her connected to Seven’s wider television lineup.
