A Florida high school student was allegedly beaten by nine teenagers after he intervened when they threw carrots at a girl during lunch, police said. The assault left the victim requiring 11 stitches.
“This victim did the right thing by standing up for a fellow student who was being bullied,” said Osceola County Sheriff Cheris Blackmon in a statement about the Oct. 16 attack and what allegedly led up to it.
“He is the brave one,” Sheriff Blackmon said, describing the student who spoke up. “The nine teens who chose to gang up and use violence against him are cowards.”
Police say the victim was eating lunch with his girlfriend inside the cafeteria at Harmony High School on Oct. 16 when the pair witnessed another girl being bullied. “Carrots were being thrown at her,” according to an OCSO press release.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victim told the group to stop throwing food at the girl. Two male students then exchanged words with him and his girlfriend. The teen attempted to calm the situation by leaving the area with her, the police release said.
Later that day, as the victim walked toward his car, the nine suspects—ranging in age from 14 to 18—allegedly confronted him in a parking area near the campus.

Police said a 16-year-old suspect threw the first punch, followed by eight other male students who allegedly struck the victim repeatedly in the head and face. The attack left him “bloodied and injured,” authorities said.
The victim’s mother drove him to a hospital, where doctors used 11 stitches to close wounds on his face, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies also received cellphone footage showing the teen walking to his vehicle while the suspects allegedly shouted profanities and attacked him. Investigators used the video to identify all nine suspects.
All nine suspects were arrested at Harmony High School and face felony charges of aggravated battery and inciting a riot. Brian Alexander-Ramirez and Quianelle Antonio Reyes Cintron, both 18, were booked into the Osceola County Jail. The seven younger suspects were taken to a juvenile detention facility.
Sheriff Blackmon issued a warning to students across Osceola County, saying anyone who physically assaults another student—whether on school grounds or elsewhere—will be arrested. He added that students involved in mob violence could face felony charges and immediate consequences.
Osceola School District Superintendent Mark Shanoff said in a statement last week that the alleged conduct was “fundamentally inconsistent with the values of our school district and the standards of conduct we expect from every student.”
Shanoff emphasized that the district treats incidents like this seriously and said violations of its expectations must result in accountability.
