Inset: Irene Miller. Background: Florida deputies arrest Miller after she allegedly left her four children home alone while traveling to Las Vegas for work (Osceola County Sheriff’s Office).
A Florida mother allegedly left her four children unsupervised for several days while she traveled to Las Vegas for work. During her absence, authorities say her 9-year-old son injured himself after dropping a dumbbell on his head.
Irene Miller, 50, faces four counts of child neglect, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Deputies were called to a home in the 3200 block of Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee at about 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. A child had reported that her 9-year-old brother dropped a weight on himself.
A deputy who arrived at the residence found the children, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, allegedly without an adult present. Miller told the deputy by phone that she was working in Las Vegas. According to deputies, she had left Florida on Oct. 18 and planned to return Oct. 23.

Miller allegedly said a babysitter was supposed to travel from Tampa each morning to help the children prepare for school and check on them after school in the evening. However, investigators said the babysitter did not remain in the home overnight.
The 9-year-old was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released. Deputies said the other three children appeared to be in good health.
Authorities arrested Miller after she allegedly returned to Florida on Friday. She was booked into the Osceola County Jail and has since posted bond. Her next court appearance was not immediately available.
“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children,” Sheriff Chris Blackmon said.
