Jennifer Lawrence Confronted Film Bosses Over Nude Scenes

Jennifer Lawrence has said she challenged film executives after discovering that unauthorised crew members had been allowed to watch her shoot nude scenes.

The Oscar-winning actress, 36, said she “came down hard” on those responsible when she learned that people who had not been cleared to see her naked were present on set.

She noted that a younger actress with less influence might have felt pressured to tolerate the breach rather than risk being labelled “difficult” and damaging her career.

Lawrence, whose private nude photographs were stolen and published online during a devastating hacking scandal in 2014, said her position in Hollywood gave her a responsibility to challenge violations of privacy.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she said she had become increasingly prepared to speak out as her career developed.

“I speak up more because I’m aware of the position I hold in the industry,” she said. “There was an instance on set where crew members who had not been approved to be present during a nude scene were there.”

“I came down hard on it because if we don’t establish that standard at the level we’re working at now, what is going to happen to an unknown 18-year-old?”

The Hunger Games star said a young performer in the same position could feel forced to choose between protecting her privacy and being viewed as difficult by the people employing her.

She continued: “If she arrives and people who haven’t been approved are there, she has to decide whether to say something and gain a reputation for being difficult.”

“Or does she allow people she is uncomfortable with to watch her naked? It was important to explain to those involved why that was not acceptable.”

Lawrence did not identify the production involved, say when the incident took place or name anyone connected with it.

Her comments address an issue that has gained greater attention in Hollywood, where productions are expected to limit access to sets during scenes involving nudity or simulated sex.

Guidance from the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA says such sequences should be filmed on closed sets, with access limited to essential cast and crew members.

The union also recommends hiring intimacy coordinators, who help ensure performers’ consent is respected and that appropriate safety measures are in place.

Lawrence has previously discussed her experiences filming intimate scenes, including her work with Robert Pattinson, 40, in the 2025 psychological drama Die My Love.

The actress, who was pregnant with her second child during production, said last November that she had felt completely comfortable filming intimate scenes with Pattinson.

She warned that a younger, less powerful actress might have felt forced to put up with the situation rather than risk being branded 'difficult' and jeopardising her career

At the time, she said she had not felt it necessary to work with an intimacy coordinator while filming with him.

“I felt very safe with Rob,” she said. “He isn’t pervy and is very much in love with Suki Waterhouse. Most of the time, we were talking about our children and relationships.”

She also claimed that some male actors can react angrily when actresses reject their advances.

“A lot of male actors take offence if you don’t want to sleep with them, and then the punishment begins,” she said, while making clear that Pattinson had not behaved in that way.

Lawrence has also spoken about initially feeling frightened by the prospect of filming nude scenes for the 2018 spy thriller Red Sparrow.

It was the first film in which she appeared naked on screen, four years after private intimate photographs were stolen and shared online without her permission.

In a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair, she said: “Red Sparrow really scared the hell out of me because I had to get naked.”

She said she had initially tried to make the film without nudity but ultimately concluded that it was essential to the role.

The actress explained that choosing to appear naked on screen carried particular significance after the hacking scandal, which she had previously called a sexual violation.

“One was my choice,” she said when comparing the two experiences. “I reclaimed something that had been taken from me, and it also felt normal.”

She credited Red Sparrow director Francis Lawrence, who had previously worked with her on The Hunger Games franchise, with helping her feel at ease during production.
