VILLA PARK, Ill. — Five suspected burglars are in custody after a police pursuit through the western suburbs ended in a crash on Interstate 290, Villa Park police said.
The incident began around 4:32 a.m. Thursday, when Addison police spotted two suspicious vehicles near Lake Street.
Police identified the vehicles as a Dodge Durango without license plates and a BMW.
The occupants were suspected of being connected to a series of commercial burglaries.
When Addison officers attempted to stop the vehicles, both drivers fled, police said.
Officers used a tire-deflation device on the BMW, but the suspects abandoned it, got into the Dodge and continued driving away.
Villa Park police joined the pursuit near North Avenue and Route 83.
A second tire-deflation device was deployed before the suspects crashed near I-290 and 25th Avenue, authorities said.
Seven suspects fled from the wreck and ran into the surrounding area.
Illinois State Police temporarily shut down the expressway while officers searched for the fleeing suspects.
Five people were eventually taken into custody, and police recovered multiple weapons.
Addison police confirmed that both vehicles had been reported stolen.
All lanes reopened by 6:10 a.m., although significant delays had already developed.
